The college was founded in 1996, with 90 students and three departments, by ICARE.It covers around 50 acres of land.There are around 1500 computers.It has a huge central library consisting of books and journals.A research centre has been recently inaugrated by the chairman Mr. Laxman Seth.The college started within the Haldia Municipality building. It is a residential engineering college, with fac
ilities including a bank, post office, medical unit, central library, restaurants, play grounds and gymnasium. The college is approved by All India Council For Technical ducation(AICTE), New Delhi and affiliated to West Bengal University Of Technology.The institute also enjoys accredition status by National Board Of accredition(NBA),Govt. Of India for Deptartments.And it is an ISO 9001:2000 & 14001:2004 certified institute.The institute is one of the recipient of financial assistance from World Bank, through Technical Education Quality Improvement program(TEQIP) for academic excellence. The institute is selected by Department of Science and Technology(DST),Govt. of India for a centre of excellence in value-added Petroleum Engineering and Petrochemicals under its Mission Reach program through TIFAC in collaboration with IOC,Haldia and HPL,Haldia.An industry-Institute Partnership Cell(UPC) has been set up for better interaction between the institute and industries for mutual benefits and co-operative research for greater competitiveness in the local and global markets. Haldia Institute of Technology has 12 departments in B.Tech course.They are: Applied Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering, Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Food Technology, Instrumentation and Control Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering. There are also courses in M.Tech,MCA and MBA. HIT provides a strategic blend of young and experienced faculties who act as the perfect mentors for the student, guiding and norturing them to become the resource pool to the industrial development of the region and the country.A research centre of 1,00,000 sq.ft. has already been inaugrated in the campus.The institute believes strongly in harnessing talent and inspires research in various subjects and issues.Faculty members are doing excellent research works in defferent disciplines recognised by international publications.Young Teacher Fast Track Awards,DST,AICTE & industry sponsored projects currently decorate the institute.
