It is one of the thirty National Institutes of Technology established and administered by Government of India[2] . It conducts undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Engineering and Architecture and Doctor of Philosophy programme in Engineering, Sciences and Humanities.
History
Established in 1986 as Regional Engineering College, Hamirpur in Hamirpur district of Himachal Pradesh, it was a joint enterprise of the Government of India and the Government of Himachal Pradesh. On 26 June 2002 REC Hamirpur was awarded the status of deemed-to-be university and upgraded into an NIT. As a result of this transition the institute came under the sole purview of the Government of India. It has been awarded the status of institute of national importance by an Act of Parliament, and judged best NIT in terms of infrastructure by the World
Bank.
The institute
NIT Hamirpur has 12 academic departments[1], namely:
* Architecture
* Civil Engineering
* Computer Science and Engineering
* Electrical and Electronics Engineering
* Electronics and Communication Engineering
* Mechanical Engineering
* Management and Social Sciences
* Physics
* Chemistry
* Energy and Environment
* Material Science
* Mathematics
Students are admitted through their performance in the All-India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE), held every year. The academic year starts from mid July and concludes in May. The institute follows the semester system. The academic year consists of an odd and an even semester, which are punctuated by a short winter vacation in December and a longer summer vacation spanning May and June. Engineering undergraduates need to successfully complete eight semesters in order to be awarded Bachelor of Technology(B.Tech), while their counterparts in the field of architecture need to complete ten semesters to be awarded Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch).
In 2005 Master of Technology (M.Tech) were introduced. In 2006 Doctor of Philosophy and in 2009, MBA programs were introduced.
[edit] Centre for Excellence
[edit] Centre for Material Science and Engineering
The Centre for Materials Science and Engineering was established in 2008. The department's first PhD degrees were awarded in Jan 2010 and M.Tech from June 2010.
[edit] Centre for Excellence in Energy and Environment
The Centre for Excellence in Energy and Environment was established in June 2009. The Centre started M.Tech [Energy Systems and Management] and Ph.D programmes in 2010 and carries out R&D in energy and environment. It will provide expert advice and consultation to agencies.
The major task of the Centre is to develop solutions to energy and environmental challenges. This involves promoting energy efficiency and the adoption of renewable energy sources like solar, wind, geothermal, hydro, and biomass, to meet energy requirements. The centre will research renewable energy policies at the local, regional, and national levels. The centre consult the organisations and networks already engaged in the field of energy. sushant thakur
[edit] TIFAC CORE at NIT HAMIRPUR
Mission REACH is an offshoot of the Technology Vision 2020, initiated by Technology Information Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC) to make India a developed nation by the year 2020. The programme will create Centers of Relevance and Excellence (COREs) by the upgrade of science and technical institutions, mandated to produce technical manpower of international standard, tailor made to the needs of industry. NIT Hamirpur is one such centre in the area of Power Transformer Diagnostics established in September 2005. The activities of this centre are supported by TIFAC, an autonomous entity under DST- Government of INDIA and from industry by Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board.
[edit] Admissions
