Department of Music UOH Formally launched on the 5th of September, 2019 by renowned musicians Padmasri Smt. Appa Rao Podile and presided over by Prof. P. Prof. Faculty:

Department of Music was established on 05.09.2019, as a latest addition to the SN School of Arts and Communication, University of Hyderabad, with the objective of offering the best academic and research programmes in traditional and modern music education The Department of Music was established in the year 2019 at the University of Hyderabad, as a latest addition to the Sarojini Naidu School of Ar

ts and Communication which houses Department of Communication, Department of Fine Arts, Department of Theatre Arts and Department of Dance. Shubha Mudgal and Dr. Aneesh Pradhan, the inauguration was done in the presence of the then Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Thirumal, the then Dean of SN School of Arts and Communication. With the objective of offering the best academic and research programmes in traditional and modern music education, the Department of Music endeavours to explore the various dimensions of classical music pedagogy to nurture the diverse skill sets of students to specialise in the areas of performance, research and teaching. Through the curriculum designed for an array of various courses like Foundation, Elective, Core and Inter-disciplinary, students will have an opportunity to pursue their interests in the historical, textual, critical and practical dimensions of the art of music and its practices and traditions. The academic curriculum will be complemented through Lectures, Demonstrations and Workshops by eminent visiting artists, seminars, conferences etc., on a regular basis. The department aims to provide an ideal learning environment to lead an aspiring music enthusiast on the path of becoming a successful musician. The Department has three faculty members who are committed to giving their best in strengthening the department in the years to come. The Department of Music successfully conducted a 3-day workshop on Exploring Semi-Classical and Light Musical Forms in Hindustani Music from March 6-8, 2025, by well-known Hindustani vocalist - Dr. Asmita Mishra.

It was an engaging experience for our PG students as they explored seasonal semi-classical forms such as Kajri, Jhoola, Hori, Thumri, and more, gaining deeper insight into the beauty and nuances of these expressive musical traditions.

The Department of Music, University of Hyderabad, is happy to share about the insightful workshop on 5th March 2025, featuring the multi-faceted percussionist Dr. P. Srinivasa Gopalan, who enlightened our PG students on 'Decoding the Rhythmic Narratives: Exploring Notational Systems and Performance Perspectives for Mridangam'.

The students had the privilege of gaining insights on understanding the various dimensions of Mridangam as an accompaniment and its role in elevating the overall concert experience. While he demonstrated the performance perspectives and techniques, he explained the nuances and styles of mridangam playing, provided an understanding of the prastara aspects and also about decoding Mohara and Muktayis, which were very valuable to students.
