๐ŸŽ“ Alumnus Ashish Kumar P Appointed Assistant Professor at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณโžก๏ธ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

We are delighted to share that Ashish Kumar P., an alumnus of the Department of Communication, Sarojini Naidu School of Arts and Communication, University of Hyderabad (MA Communication, 2011โ€“13), has been appointed a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Digital Media and Communications at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, USA. ๐ŸŽ‰

๐Ÿ“ฝ๏ธ A first-generation university graduate from Hyderabad, Ashish is a documentary filmmaker and interdisciplinary artist. After his MA at UoH, he earned an MFA in Media Arts, Cinema and Television Arts from Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

๐ŸŽฌ His MFA thesis film, In/Dignity, follows Ambedkar statues in India and the US to explore caste, memory, and the politics of visibility โ€” combining personal narrative, archive, field interviews, and experimental form.

๐ŸŽฅ Along the way, he has worked as a director, assistant director, and post-production editor across Indian and international media, collaborating with Google, NTFP-EP, ICRISAT, community radio, and Ambedkarite collectives.

๐Ÿ“š At Pitt-Bradford, he teaches video and sound production in the Division of Communication and the Arts, framing the classroom as a collaborative space where students ask not just how a story is told, but why and for whom.

๐Ÿ’ฌ In his note to the Department, Ashish wrote that the knowledge, guidance, and training he received during his MA at UoH were invaluable in shaping his artistic approach and academic career โ€” and he hopes to build student/faculty exchange and joint research with his alma mater. ๐Ÿค

Congratulations, Ashish Kumar! Your journey is an inspiration to every student walking through the corridors of S N School. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ’

๐Ÿ“‰ India's young population is no dividend without investment.

The Department of Communication, Sarojini Naidu School of Arts and Communication, University of Hyderabad, hosted the 17th Dr. C V S Sarma Memorial Lecture on 11 September 2026, held annually in honour of our departed colleague and senior faculty member Dr. C V S Sarma.

This year's speaker was Mr. Maheshwer Peri, Founder and Chairman of Careers360, a data-led education and career planning platform, and former President & Publisher of the Outlook Group. His lecture: "Demographic Dividend or Demographic Nightmare: India's Ticking Time Bomb"

๐ŸŽค His central argument was that India's vast population does not by itself justify a claim to a demographic advantage. A dividend arrives when a nation invests in the education of its young โ€” not merely in upskilling them for employment. Education, he argued, equips a young population with the capacity to think and a broad vision for both life and work.

Some of what he laid out:

๐Ÿ“Š 68.4% of Indians are of working age โ€” but that describes an age profile, not productivity
๐Ÿ’ฐ Education's share of net revenue receipts has fallen from a peak of 7.01% to 3.8%, against a promise of 6% restated by NEP 2020
๐Ÿซ Government colleges grew 1% while private colleges grew 42%; around 1.1 lakh government schools closed between 2015โ€“16 and 2023โ€“24
๐ŸŽ“ IIM Ahmedabad fees have risen from โ‚น3.16 lakh in 2012 to โ‚น27.5 lakh today
๐Ÿงพ 1.86 crore applications for roughly 55,000 advertised government posts โ€” 338 candidates per vacancy
๐Ÿ“š In NEET, cities with top coaching institutes recorded an 87% success rate against 13.5% in cities without them
๐Ÿšช 31.5% of students drop out between Classes 9 and 12

โš ๏ธ Continued underinvestment, he warned, could turn the dividend into a disaster over the next twenty to thirty years.

๐Ÿ’ฌ The lecture was well attended by students, faculty and members of Hyderabad's civil society, and was followed by a stimulating Q&A. Asked why education is not given greater priority, Mr. Peri was more hopeful than the lecture might suggest: education, he said, has become a subject of major public discussion, and people are now talking about schools and colleges โ€” among the most positive developments in the country in recent years.

๐Ÿ™ Our thanks to Mr. Peri for a lecture that gave our students far more to argue with than to simply agree with. ๐ŸŽ“
