The mangoes, scientifically known as Mangifera Indica belonging to the Anacardiaceous family, originated over 5,000 years ago in the Indo-Burma region, which extends from eastern India and southern China across Southeast Asia. Mango is considered as a National fruit in India. And with a number of varieties, it has been named “The King of Fruits”;. It is inextricably connected with the folklore and religious ceremonies of India. One of the most well-known traditional uses of Mango leaves in India is to use them as a decorative door hanging which is known as a Torana (gateway in Sanskrit) in Indian culture. Associated with Deities and Gods in the Hindu religion, it is believed that the leaves are an embodiment of God, and keeping them at the entrance will bring good luck and prosperity to the house. People also string them up in religious ceremonies and during weddings as a blessing of prosperity and fertility. Scientifically, mango leaves become sturdy when mature, which allows them to last for several days. Therefore, the dark green colour allows the leaves to purify the air by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. The leaves have been active ingredients in Indian Ayurvedic medicine.

Mr Aniruddha Naik, Ph.D Research Scholar from the Department of Sociology, School of Social Sciences, University of Hyderabad (UoH), working with Prof. G Nagaraju, presented his paper titled “Contemporary trends in Sexuality: A Cinematic Odyssey in Bollywood” at the 7th Annual South Asia Conference, organised by Ireland India Institute, Dublin City University held during April 24-26, 2024.

Bollywood is known for maintaining “culture of silence” on s*x and s*xuality themes till recently. The paper traces that though the Indian epistemology celebrates the s*x and s*xuality but Victorian morality pushes it to the private domain. However, in the recent periods, there has been a paradigm shift in addressing the various themes related to s*xuality and s*x education in Bollywood movies due to progressive movements in India.

The scholars from south Asia gathered at the conference to discussed and debates on various themes such as religion, Gender, Environment, s*xuality, rituals, Dalit and so on.

Aniruddha would like to thank University of Hyderabad for the IOE financial assistance.

30/04/2024

A book on Vulnerable Earth: The Literature of Climate Crisis by Prof. Pramod K Nayar, faculty in Department of English at University of Hyderabad (UoH) has been recently published by the Cambridge University Press.

Vulnerable Earth is a study of the literature of the climate crisis. Building on the assumption that the crisis is planetary in scope even if differential and unequal in effects, it examines literary fiction, graphic novels, memoirs about toxic wastes and neo-slavery narratives, mostly from the contemporary decades, but touching upon select antecedents as well, and from all over the world. The study covers texts that fictionalize a 'hydrocrisis', those that are concerned with species extinction and experimental solutions such as rewilding, fiction and memoirs that are interested in exploring the conversations between and across species in multispecies encounters and, finally, texts that show the linkage between social justice and environmental justice. Focusing on aesthetics, narrative modes and constructions of damaged, wasted and at-risk worlds, this book shows how the literature of climate crisis foregrounds a feature that humans and nonhumans, the living and the non-living share, differentially, with the planet: vulnerability.

Pramod Nayar, winner of the Visitor’s Award for Best Research in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences from the Hon’ble President of India (2018) holds the UNESCO Chair in Vulnerability Studies, a ‘teaching and research’ unit as defined by UNESCO (https://ucvulnerabilitystudies.uohyd.ac.in).

He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, a Fellow of the English Association, and his most recent books include Nuclear Cultures (New York: Routledge 2023), Life/Writing (Orient BlackSwan 2023) and the edited 6-volume The Imperial Archives (Bloomsbury 2022-23). With Anna Kurian of the Department of English, Nayar has put together the world’s first OER for Indian Writing in English (https://indianwritinginenglish.uohyd.ac.in), a project under the (Institution of Eminence) IoE project.
