On 21st January 2025, the Zenith Astronomy Club successfully organized an event to observe the rare celestial phenomenon of planetary alignment. The event was conducted in the presence of Prof. P. K. Suresh, Dean, School of Physics; Faculty Coordinator ZAC: Dr. Ashoka S. Vudayagiri; Prof. K. C. James Raju; and Convener ZAC: Mr. Dilip Kumar. Students from the Indian School of Business (ISB) actively participated, making it a collaborative and enriching experience. The event was a great success, and received encouraging feedback from the attendees.

During the stargazing event, they witnessed a fascinating alignment of Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. This rare phenomenon allowed them to observe these planets appearing close to each other in the night sky, creating a breathtaking celestial display.

In addition, they had the opportunity to observe the Great Orion Nebula, with its smoky clouds and intricate structures. This iconic deep-sky object provided a mesmerizing view of a stellar nursery, where new stars are born, leaving the audience in awe.

The research group comprising Mr. Arjun V.S. Kidavu (SRF), Prof. Anil Kumar Chaudhary of DAE-CoE (ACRHEM), School of Physics, University of Hyderabad (UoH), and Dr. P.K. Soni, Scientist H and Associate Director, TBRL, Chandigarh have jointly investigated and verified the thermal decomposition mechanisms of RDX and TNT using QCL laser based pulsed Photoacoustic pyro-analyzer (indigenously designed). In the path-breaking research, the team has experimentally verified the Reactive Force Field model reported by Strachan et al. for premium RDX explosives and identified the different types of by-product gases in various temperature ranges using an indigenously designed photoacoustic (PA)thermal analyzer system. The study provides significant information about RDX and TNT explosive molecules’ exothermic energy release mechanisms under controlled conditions. That is an important aspect of their use as Rocket /missile fuel and storage under different. The team have identified NO2, N2O4 (dinitrogen tetroside), HCN, HNO2, and CH2O as byproduct gases from RDX whereas TNT releases HNO2 and CH2O along with NO2-N2O4 mixture.

The percentages of HCN, CH2O, and HNO2 for RDX are 19%, 26 %, and 12% of the NO2-N2O4 mixture, whereas TNT releases HNO2 and CH2O of 9% and 28%, respectively of NO2-N2O4 mixture.

Communitas, the student body of the Department of Political Science at the School of Social Sciences, University of Hyderabad, organized a talk titled “Does Bureaucratic Resistance Affect Women’s Ability to Govern?” delivered by Dr. Bhumi Purohit, an Assistant Professor of Public Policy at Georgetown University’s McCourt School, which was attended by students and faculty of the department.

Dr. Purohit presented her work on bureaucratic resistance and women panchayat leaders in Telangana. Her research focuses on how women sarpanches face resistance from their District Magistrates by investigating how the gender of a politician influences their ability to coordinate with the bureaucracy.

Dr. Purohit argues that bureaucrats perceive women as having low political capital, which makes them less likely to help female politicians. She contends that bureaucrats are driven by career incentives related to promotions and transfers, which depend on their relationships with principals or their work on policy implementation. To obtain such transfers or promotions, bureaucrats may either exercise discretion or exhibit resistance towards their principals. Here, she explains that the identity of the principal, or what she refers to as identity-based heuristics, plays a significant role in determining whether the bureaucrat will exercise discretion or resistance.

Ms. Hasna C, Junior Research Fellow at the Centre for Health Psychology, School of Medical Sciences, University of Hyderabad (UoH), in collaboration with her supervisor, Dr. Meera Padhy, Associate Professor at the Centre for Health Psychology, UoH, successfully presented a research paper titled ‘The Social Skills and Occupational Hardiness as Predictors of Well-being Among Teachers in India: A Quantitative Study’ at the 6th APSPA International Conference 2024. The conference was hosted by Assumption University, Thailand, from November 28th to 30th, 2024.

The presentation delved into a critical examination of the interplay between social skills, occupational hardiness, and workplace well-being among a cohort of Indian teachers. Utilizing a quantitative research methodology, the study aimed to elucidate the predictive significance of these variables on the multifaceted dimensions of teacher well-being.

Preliminary findings suggested a strong positive correlation between occupational hardiness and well-being, while social skill emerged as a significant predictor of workplace well-being. The presentation argued that cultivating social skills and fostering a climate of occupational hardiness within educational institutions are crucial for enhancing teacher well-being and overall job satisfaction.

The conference provided a valuable platform for disseminating research findings to a diverse international audience of academics, researchers, and practitioners in the field of psychology. The presentation generated significant interest and sparked insightful discussions among attendees, leading to valuable feedback and potential avenues for future collaborative research.

Ms. Hasna C extends her sincere gratitude to the Institute of Eminence (IoE), University of Hyderabad, for the generous financial support provided for her participation in the 6th APSPA International Conference 2024. On 16th of January 2025, the Department of Political Science (School of Social Sciences), University of Hyderabad, organized a lecture titled ‘Life History as a Feminist Method’, delivered by Prof. Sundari Anitha, Chair in Sociological Studies, University of Sheffield, UK. Prof. Aparna Rayaprol, Department of Sociology, chaired it. Dr. Sneha Banerjee from the Department of Political Science was the discussant.

The lecture focused on the Life History method as a powerful tool for understanding lived experiences through deep, personal narratives. It was emphasized that this approach goes beyond incident-centred studies, offering a contextualized view of individual experiences within broader societal structures and power dynamics. The method often involves extended interviews. The process is resource-intensive, requiring careful recording and transcription, and the researcher must navigate both the risks and rewards of establishing rapport with interviewees.
