As part of the orientation session, new Master's students at the Department of Communication attended two talks by alumni speakers.

Ms. Gautami Challagulla spoke about her experiences as a new age Tollywood writer and a pioneer in building web content for Telugu audiences.

The second talk was given by Mr. B.V S***a Reddy. He introduced the students to his work as a development communication professional.

Students got the opportunity to ask questions and engage in lively discussions with both speakers.

Department of Communication is delighted to announce that Prof. P. Thirumal has been nominated as a member of the Editorial Board, Rutgers University Press for launching a first ever book series on Post-colonial Media Studies.

This Editorial Board serves in an advisory capacity to support the mission, quality, and strategic development of the Post-colonial Media Studies series. Board members provide scholarly expertise, assist in identifying emerging areas of research, and help maintain the academic standards and reputation of the series.

A series of books on post-colonial media studies is pioneering because this area has long been dominated by the Humanities/Social Science disciplines.

We offer our heartfelt congratulations to Prof. Thirumal!

Department of Communication is delighted to announce that Prof. Vinod Pavarala has been appointed Emeritus Professor at the Sarojini Naidu School of Arts & Communication — the first such honour in the School's nearly 40-year history. It follows his superannuation as Senior Professor in January 2026, after an association with the University and our Department spanning over three decades.

As Emeritus Professor, he remains associated with the Department of Communication in an honorary capacity, keeping his institutional memory and mentorship available to the university fraternity and scholars.

We wholeheartedly congratulate Prof. Pavarala on this well-deserved recognition!

🎓 Prof. Vinod Pavarala Appointed as the First-Ever Emeritus Professor in the Sarojini Naidu School of Arts & Communication

Prof. Vinod Pavarala has been appointed Emeritus Professor at the Sarojini Naidu School of Arts & Communication — the first such honour in the School's nearly 40-year history. 🏛️ It follows his superannuation as Senior Professor in January 2026, after an association with the University spanning over three decades.

His contributions are difficult to overstate. He steered the Department as Head twice and served two terms as Dean, chaired the NAAC Steering Committee, led the University's COVID-19 Task Force, served as Director of the Office of International Affairs, and was the University's Spokesperson. 📚 He strengthened its Master's and PhD programmes, embedded a culture of rigorous research, and mentored generations of scholars and faculty.

🌍 This standing led UNESCO to establish the first-ever Chair on Community Media globally at the Department in 2011, entrusting him with building it. Since then, he has driven research and advocacy on community radio across India, South Asia, Africa, and Europe, shaping national policies. His books include 'Other Voices: The Struggle for Community Radio in India' and 'Community Radio in South Asia: Reclaiming the Airwaves', with visiting fellowships at Princeton, Duke, Loughborough, and Queensland. ✈️

He has since joined Mahindra University as Senior Professor and Advisor, setting up the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Communication & Media (CIRCOM) and leading India's arm of the five-nation European Research Council project REACT. As Emeritus Professor, he remains associated with the Department in an honorary capacity, keeping his institutional memory and mentorship available to the university fraternity and scholars. 🙏

Department of Communication is delighted to share that our research scholars Deepika Ratan, Bala Krishna Kanukati, Treesa Reena John and Jumana Parvin presented their research papers at the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR 2026) hosted by University of Galway in Ireland from 28 June to 2 July 2026.

The theme of this year’s IAMCR conference was “Peripheries and Connections: Media, Communication, and Transformation”.

A two-day workshop on narrative journalism, News in Tales, was held on July 29 and 30 at the University of Hyderabad. Organised by Newsreel Asia in partnership with the High Commission of Canada, and hosted by the Department of Communication, the workshop brought together working journalists, students, and media professionals to explore storytelling in journalism as well how facts can be told with feeling, and how stories can go beyond headlines.

The workshop opened with brief remarks by faculty coordinators Prof. Vinod Pavarala and Prof. Anjali Lal Gupta, followed by a welcome address by Mr. Geoffrey Dean, Acting Deputy High Commissioner of Canada to India. Former CEO and Editor of The Hans India and HMTV Ramachandra Murthy was the chief guest at the inaugural session. In his special address, Mr. Geoffrey Dean highlighted the importance of the freedom of press in the country.

Vishal Arora, Founder and Director of Newsreel Asia, led the sessions alongside co-founders Surabhi Singh and Harsh*ta Rathore. Through a mix of presentations, discussions, and hands-on exercises, the workshop took participants through the basics of visual storytelling, narrative structure, and field techniques. From camera settings like ISO, aperture, and shutter speed to concepts like framing, focus, and sequencing shots—everything was broken down in a way that connected visuals to emotions.
