The open-software development model (using collaborative versioning and issue tracking software) has resulted in high-quality software all over the world. This model can be used profitably within the Institute for all kinds of projects ranging from research projects to large programming assignments. Moreover, each research center in the Institute produces software both as final deliverables and al

so for its internal use in order to support its research. If packaged properly as open software these can be used by end-users and other research labs all over the world. The center motivates and supports students for contests such as the Google Summer of Code and ACM ICPC. IIIT-H teams have been consistently qualifying for the ACM ICPC World Finals every year. Center for Open Source, IIIT Hyderabad and Open Source Development Group held Hacktoberfest Hyderabad 2017 on the 29th of October. The event aimed at helping and mentoring young coding enthusiasts work with Open Source and FOSS communities that are dedicated to creating open-source applications. Communities like CodePlex, Mozilla Hyderabad, Swecha, Angular Hyd, Java Community, HydPy, Rust, Drupal, IOT Group have come at one place to mentor developers to get involved with Open source. This was the LARGEST ever gathering in Hyderabad with these many communities at one place.
People from companies like Google (Prateek Bhatnagar mentored React), DE Shaw (Madhumitha, mentored Jupyter Notebook), Srinivas Kodali (who gave a lightning talk on Privacy and mentored for Open Street Maps) and some students from IIIT have also mentored.
A big thank you to all the participants, mentors and communities that helped make this possible. We do hope for a long and continued association of the students of IIIT Hyderabad with the world of open source technology!
