Introducing our first Core Adjudicator, Avigat Bawa!
"I consider it a privilege to be writing this introduction because I know there are a lot of people who have been a larger part of Bawa’s debating journey than myself. But fortunately for me, my small journey as a debater began with him and till today, I haven’t done a tournament without him. So here’s a little bit about a person who despite having done 19 tournaments, shown no flicker of hesitation in carrying a debater with less than half of that experience, on his team.
In general, Bawa is quite an emotional person except when he’s debating, that’s when logic and rationale take primacy. From winning definition challenges single handedly to brilliant whip speeches, which very often swing the debate in his team’s favor, Bawa has done it all. Drawing inspiration from his crazy whip structure, let me give you three major ‘constructives’, which shall prove to you why he will be a crazy person to have on core.
First, he’s someone who takes his commitments as seriously as possible (sometimes far too seriously). This simply means that he will work tirelessly to ensure that he does everything within his ability to give you stellar motions, and fair, logically sound verdicts. Second, you will rarely see him angry. A lot can go wrong in the organization of a PD but Bawa never loses his cool, even in the most testing of times. As a result, coming out of challenging situations will not be a problem. Third, his debating CV adds all the legitimacy to the tournament. Here’s what his debating experience looks like:
1. Winner and Best Speaker, 7th CNLU PD, 2016
2. Winner and among the top 5 speakers, NUSRL PD, 2016.
3. Winner, Prologue- Presidency University, Kolkata’s PD, 2015 & 2016.
4. Finalist, NLIU Bhopal PD, 2017; BITS Goa BP, 2016; Prologue, 2017.
5. Quarter Finalist, IIT KGP PD, 2016; KIIT PD, 2016.
6. Pre- Quarters at Derozio Memorial Debate, 2015.
7. Octa finalist at NUJS PD, 2016 & 2017.
8. Novice Finalist at NUJS PD 2015; KIIT PD, 2015.
A debating career, which basically spans three years and has won almost all accolades available in the activity. All said and done, one cannot ignore the contribution that this ‘little guy’ has made to other people’s debating career. Ask his juniors at Xavier’s and they will tell you about all the practice debates they’ve done at his house. Add to this a lot of food from Cakes and you have a DebSoc Secretary who has taken debating at Xavier’s to a new high.
A little low in common sense but best person to chill with and an even better friend; here’s to Bawa, finally getting his due.
We thank Yashvi Ganeriwal for writing this introduction.
