Centre for Museology & Conservation, University of Rajasthan, Jaipur organized a panel discussion under the ‘Explore Museology’ series on October 19th, 2022. The topic of the discussion was “Museum Education: Theories, Ethics & Opportunities”. The discussion included the intellect contribution of Museologists, Conservationists, Curator, Historians, Archaeologists, Museum-IT expert etc., which benefitted the knowledge of students and the faculties of museology.
The event started with the welcoming message of Dr. Neekee Chaturvedi (Director, Centre for Museology & Conservation, University of Rajasthan, Jaipur) and ice-breaking which involved activities to ease the new students and make them familiar with the environment and mutual interaction. Dr. Tamegh Panwar (Assistant Director, Centre for Museology & Conservation, University of Rajasthan, Jaipur) also addressed the students and made them aware about the Centre and its academic activities. This was followed by the inauguration of the ‘Discussion Session’ that witnessed the watering of plant by the speakers.
Throwing light on the concept of ‘New Museology’, Dr. Neekee Chaturvedi that the social and political aspects of museums should be analyzed. By quoting the example of Borunda (Jodhpur) based ‘Arna - Jharna’ museum, she said that collection of musical instruments in Rajasthan is a way of preserving the heritage. She also stressed on the importance of implementing moral behavioral code in museums. She stated that according to many specialists, like the Kohinoor diamond many other invaluable artefacts kept at British museum belongs to India and they must be returned.
Dr. Tamegh Panwar highlighted the disciplinary interdependence between museology, culture, heritage and heritage. According to him, museology takes the help and reference from other subjects but creates a specific perspective. It is a unique subject which involves communication of culture through museum collection.
Museum curator, Ms. Surbhi Mathur talked about the points on the positive affiliation towards the museum objects. By taking the examples of traditional jewels she talked about the principles of museum exhibition, labels and research.
Museologist and IT-Professional Dr. Indrajeet Bhattacharya, threw light on the museum technologies that are in the process of implementation through innovative experiments. He also talked about the concept and usefulness of ‘Internet of Things’ in museum and said that such technology can also be used in the maintenance of a museum.
Prof. Rajeev Jain (Vice Chancellor, University of Rajasthan, Jaipur) communicated his best wishes for the panel discussion.
The discussion also involved the projects of the center, contribution of ex-students in the preparation of ‘Dictionary of Paintings’ (INTACH Project), and various kind of job opportunities for museology students. In past, many students of the center have found placement and job in various museums and heritage organizations like INTACH in the field of museology and conservation. The event was successful in igniting the spark of interest among the students towards museology subject.
