Premendra Mitra – Tree Plantation in Memory

On 3 May 2026, the National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of Balagarh Bijoy Krishna Mahavidyalaya organized a tree plantation programme at Jirat village in solemn remembrance of Premendra Mitra on his death anniversary. This initiative formed part of the ongoing “Monishicharcha” scheme, under which NSS volunteers commemorate great personalities throughout the year by planting trees on their birth and death anniversaries.

Premendra Mitra (1904–1988) was a distinguished figure of the Kallol era and one of the most versatile contributors to Bengali literature. As a poet, short story writer, novelist, and filmmaker, he enriched literary culture with iconic characters such as Ghanada, Parashar Barma, Mejokarta, and Mamababu. His creative genius and intellectual depth continue to inspire generations.

Recognizing the growing threat of global warming, the NSS volunteers symbolically linked remembrance with responsibility. Tree plantation was presented as a healing act for the planet—nature’s own medicine against environmental degradation. By planting saplings, the volunteers not only paid tribute to Premendra Mitra’s life and legacy but also contributed to ecological restoration.

This programme reflects a meaningful synthesis of memory and action, where respect for great lives is expressed through sustainable environmental practices, ensuring a greener and healthier future for all.

National Service Scheme
Scheme: Monishicharcha
Date: 2 May 2026

On the birth anniversary of Bibhutibhushan Sarkar (2 May 1917 – 22 January 1972), a noted anti-British freedom fighter and industrial entrepreneur, a tree plantation programme was organized as a mark of tribute. He was the founder of Krishna Glass Works and contributed both to India’s freedom struggle and to indigenous industrial development.

To honour his life and ideals, NSS volunteers undertook a plantation drive at Jirat village. The programme symbolically connects his legacy of nation-building with environmental responsibility. Trees, as the most effective natural remedy against global warming, represent life, sustainability, and healing of the planet.

Under the Monishicharcha scheme, NSS volunteers observe the birth and death anniversaries of eminent personalities throughout the year by planting trees, thereby creating a living memorial. This initiative reflects a meaningful blend of remembrance and ecological action.

The observance of Bibhutibhushan Sarkar’s birth anniversary through tree plantation not only pays homage to his contributions but also reinforces the message that service to the nation today lies in protecting and nurturing the environment for future generations.

Manna Dey Birth Anniversary Commemoration through Tree Plantation

On 1 May 2026, the National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of Balagarh Bijoy Krishna Mahavidyalaya observed the birth anniversary of Manna Dey by organizing a tree plantation programme under the scheme Monishicharcha. Remembering his immense contribution to Indian music, volunteers paid tribute through an environmentally meaningful initiative.

Manna Dey (1 May 1919 – 24 October 2013), born as Prabodh Chandra Dey, was one of the most versatile and respected playback singers in the Indian subcontinent. With a musical career spanning over six decades, he rendered songs in nearly 24 languages including Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, and Gujarati. His classical foundation, combined with adaptability across genres, earned him recognition as one of the greatest singers in Indian music history.

To honour his legacy, NSS volunteers planted saplings in Jirat village. This initiative reflects a broader commitment: throughout the year, volunteers observe the birth and death anniversaries of eminent personalities through tree plantation, symbolizing respect and social responsibility.

In the context of global warming, tree plantation stands as a vital remedy for environmental sustainability. By linking the remembrance of great lives with ecological action, this programme transforms tribute into a living, growing legacy—benefiting both present and future generations. Sushil Chandra Sengupta (Sushil Sen) – Tree Plantation in Memory

On 30 April 2026, the National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of Balagarh Bijoy Krishna Mahavidyalaya organized a tree plantation programme under the scheme “Monishicharcha” to commemorate the martyrdom day of freedom fighter Sushil Chandra Sengupta, popularly known as Sushil Sen.

Sushil Sen (1891–1915) was one of the young revolutionaries of the Indian freedom movement who bravely resisted British rule. At the age of just 15, he protested against the repressive actions of District Magistrate Kingsford and was subjected to brutal punishment for raising the slogan “Vande Mataram.” His courage and sacrifice remain a source of inspiration. He later lost his life during a revolutionary action, dedicating himself completely to the cause of India’s independence.

To honor his memory, NSS volunteers planted saplings at Jirat village. This initiative reflects the spirit of remembering great souls through meaningful action. The programme is part of a year-long commitment where volunteers observe the birth and death anniversaries of eminent personalities by planting trees every day.

In the context of rising global warming, tree plantation is one of the most effective remedies to heal the environment. Just as a healer works to save lives, planting trees nurtures and sustains the Earth. Through this symbolic act, the life and sacrifice of Sushil Sen were respectfully remembered, linking his legacy with the responsibility of protecting our planet for future generations. On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Sabitri Roy (28 April 1918 – 8 December 1985), a noted Bengali writer and socially conscious novelist, a tree plantation programme was organized by the volunteers of the National Service Scheme under the scheme Monishicharcha. She was a distinguished literary figure who carried forward the tradition of socially engaged novels inspired by Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay, reflecting the struggles and realities of common people.

Narayan Sanyal (26 April 1924 – 7 February 2005) was remembered on his birth anniversary through a tree plantation programme organized under the National Service Scheme (NSS), “Monishi Charcha” unit of Balagarh Bijoy Krishna Mahavidyalaya on 26 April 2026.
In observance of his intellectual legacy as a distinguished writer of modern Bengali literature and a civil engineer, NSS volunteers conducted a meaningful environmental initiative in Jirat village. As part of a year-round initiative where, on all 365 days, birth and death anniversaries of great personalities are commemorated through tree plantation, saplings were planted in his honour.
The programme highlighted the urgent global concern of climate change and global warming. In a symbolic interpretation, environmental degradation was treated as a global disease, and tree plantation was presented as its most essential “medicine.” Just as a physician treats illness to sustain life, planting trees was emphasized as a therapeutic act for sustaining ecological balance.
The initiative connected literary remembrance with environmental responsibility, reflecting how cultural homage can merge with ecological healing. Through this act, NSS volunteers reaffirmed their commitment to nature, sustainability, and social awareness. The plantation drive not only honoured Narayan Sanyal’s memory but also reinforced the message that protecting the environment is essential for preserving life itself.
