Brief on Mangampeta Barites

Barytes (BaSO4) is one of the chief sources of barium. It contains 65% of BaO and occurs eitheras crystalline or massive. It can be easily identified by its high specific gravity. Snowwhite/white barytes generally used in the chemical and paint industry and to a minor extent in rubber, textile, paper, cardboard, leather, oil, cloth, linoleum, plastic and ceramic industries. The off-coloured barytes is used as drilling mud in oil well drilling. The barytes deposits are classified into three maintypes: 1) vein and cavity filling, 2) bedded and 3)residual deposits. A majority of the deposits occur in veins or cavity fillings along fault zones. Barytes is known from several locations in Cuddapah, Kurnool, Anantapur and Nellore districts. The occurrences are mostly associated with the Vempalle Formation, Pulivendla Quartzite and Cumbum (Pullampet)Formation of the Cuddapah Supergroup, the Pakhalsediments and the Nellore Schist Belt. TheMangampeta and Vinjamur deposits are bedded type.

In the Mangampeta, barytes of volcanic origin occurs as a thick-bedded deposit within the PullampetShale. Four types of barytes are found viz., grey granular, lapilli/rosette, vein and replacement types of these, the first two types are of economic importance. The deposit occurs as two lenses, the northern lens is about 12.2 km long and 900 m wide and 40 m thick whereas the southern lens is about300 m long and 80 m wide. A reserve of about 62Mt (as of 1.04.2010, IBM) of barytes with the percentage of BaO varying between 55.09 and 62.65was estimated for this deposit. The Mangampetdeposit is an addition on the mineral map and one of the commendable contributions by GSI

There is a tremendous potential for oil and petroleum exploration in Indian Sub-Continent informed Prof. Shaik Mohammed Hussain, Chairperson of School of Earth and Atmospheric Science, University of Madras, Chennai. He was delivering a special lecture on the theme “Applications of Fossils in Paleo environmental Studies and Hydrocarbon Exploration with special reference to Astrocoda” as part of the Sir C.V. Raman Popular Lecture series organized by Yogi Vemana University on February 25th. During his lecture he informed that reconstruction of the biological, chemical, and physical nature of the environment at the time of deposition can be done as per the rock's paleontological record. Basing upon the fossils found within the rock unit and its Paleoenvironmental analysis the depositional environment can be interpreted he explained. In this backdrop ‘Astrocoda Fossils’ are providing valuable Information for reconstruction of depositional environments and to study positions of hydrocarbon deposits he said. Prof. Shaik Mohammed Hussain was llater felicitated by the University Vice-Chancellor Prof. M. Surya Kalavathi. The Coordinator of the Department of Geology Dr. G. Sudharsana Raju, staff of the department of Dr. K. Raghu Babu, Dr. V. Sunitha, Dr. N. Jayaraju, Dr. S. Srinivasa Goud, Coordinator of Department of Earth Sciences Dr. Lakshmi Prasad, staff of the department Dr. T. Sivapratap students and research scholars participated in the special lecture.
