๐ Congratulations to Prof Nitin Mohan and his PhD students Deepak Khushalani and Joydipta Kar from BSBE, IIT Kanpur, along with Saman and Aayushi from . Lipi Thukralโs lab at CSIR-IGIB, on their recent publication in EMBO Reports:
โLC3 forms functional nanoclusters on autophagosomesโ
In an exciting collaborative study with the labs of Dr Lipi Thukral (CSIR-IGIB) and Dr Anirban Banerjee (IIT Bombay), the researchers uncover a fundamental paradigm in autophagy: LC3 is not uniformly distributed across membranes; rather, it self-assembles into functional nanoclusters.
๐ฌ Key findings:
Using a combination of coarse-grained MD simulations and super-resolution STORM imaging, the study captured nanoscale LC3 "islands" organized on autophagosomes.
2. LC3 nanoclusters colocalise with PI (3)P lipid nanodomains, which are governed by a distinct protein motif.
3. Disrupting this clustering interface directly impairs autophagosome motility and compromises intracellular bacterial clearance (xenophagy).
The significance of these findings is further highlighted by an accompanying News & Views article from the Hurley Lab at UC Berkeley.
