From Muddy Village Roads to the Frontiers of Semiconductor Research: A Childhood Dream Takes Shape

As a child, Prof. Yogesh Chauhan would gaze at every four-wheeler that rumbled through his muddy village. Even today, one sentence from his father echoes in his mind: “Padhai karoge to yeh milega”—if you study well, you will get this.

Prof. Chauhan’s childhood was marked by hardship. Born in a village on the border of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, he grew up in an area with limited electricity, inadequate water supply and few educational opportunities. He grazed goats, fetched water from well, slept outside his house without fan and helped his father in cutting wood with axe and repairing cycle puncture. Yet, amid these challenges, his father remained determined to give him an aspiration beyond the boundaries of the village.

His research group has developed multiple industry-standard SPICE models that are used and commercialised by semiconductor companies. Among his notable contributions is the development of one of the world’s first industry-standard models for Gallium Nitride High Electron Mobility Transistors (GaN HEMTs), known as ASM-HEMT. In recent years, his group has also been working towards developing an industry-first SPICE model for Silicon Carbide (SiC) MOSFETs, with applications in high-power electronics.

The journey from a remote village with an irregular electricity to the laboratories at the forefront of semiconductor technology is a striking reflection on Prof. Chauhan’s grit, curiosity and determination.

And despite having traversed continents and worked in some of the world’s leading research environments, he remains connected to his roots. He continues to visit his village regularly. “I love to spend time with my childhood friends in the village.”

And that childhood fascination with cars has never faded. Beyond the laboratory, Prof. Chauhan enjoys riding superbikes, skiing and pursuing adventure activities—a reflection of the same restless curiosity that once made the boy in a remote village dream of a world beyond the horizon.

Remembering a lifetime of five years, through memories that never fade.

This World Photography Day, we revisit the IIT Kanpur of the ’70s through the lens of Mr. Shirish Joshi (BT/CHE/1978), a Distinguished Services awardee, who captured the campus, its people and its everyday stories when cameras were still a rarity.

His photographs went beyond everyday campus life, documenting some of the defining moments of the era - from the second student strike on campus to the All India Inter-University Swimming Championships in 1976, the first of its kind in India, and again in 1977, as well as the Cultural Fests of 1974, 1975, 1976 and 1977. His lens also captured quieter, timeless glimpses of the campus - library, airstrip, and the people. And from a Cessna airplane, he took to the skies to capture some remarkable aerial views of the IIT Kanpur campus.

Five decades later, his photographs remain a beautiful window into an IIT Kanpur of another era.

In his own words, "How do you remember a lifetime of five years that ends with card games in the Quad and a drink with your professor? You relive it through your photographs, because you can walk down that path only once. And as you pass, pause for a moment and savour your images in vivid, indelible transience."

We cannot thank you enough, Mr. Shirish Joshi, for preserving these memories, one frame at a time.

🔐 Expanding Cybersecurity Education Across India

C3ihub, IIT Kanpur, has signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Agra (DBRAU), formerly Agra University, and the Vivekanand Incubation Foundation (VIF) to launch a vocational program in cybersecurity for students across the university's affiliated institutions. C3iHub, IIT Kanpur, has signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Dr. Ambedkar University (DBRAU), Agra — formerly known as Agra University — and the Vivekanand Incubation Foundation (VIF) to launch a vocational program in cybersecurity for students across the university's affiliated institutions.

The newly launched program aims to equip students with essential cybersecurity knowledge and practical skills. Delivered entirely online and in Hindi, the course has been designed to be accessible and easy to understand for a broad student base, including learners in semi-urban and rural areas who may find technical instruction in English to be a barrier.

The course will cover cybercrime and cyber hygiene, social media threats, identity theft, personal data leaks, women's and children's online safety, the dark web, cyberterrorism, and other illegal activities. Quizzes, workshops, and course feedback will be integral components of the program, supported by customized virtual labs to provide students with real-world, practical experience.

Collaboration Framework

Under this collaboration, C3iHub will design and deliver the curriculum, drawing on IIT Kanpur's research and training expertise in cybersecurity. VIF will provide the administrative and technical infrastructure required for course deployment at scale. Alongside this vocational course, the university will establish a dedicated Cybersecurity Counselling Cell (CCC) for the mitigation and prevention of cybercrime incidents and to provide support to students.

The initiative aims to reach 3 lakh+ students across 550+ colleges affiliated with Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Agra, contributing significantly to India's cybersecurity capacity-building efforts and the creation of a skilled, security-aware digital workforce.

MoU Signing Ceremony

The MoU signing ceremony, held on August 14, 2026, was graced by distinguished guests, including Prof. Ashu Rani, Vice Chancellor, DBRAU, who joined online, in the presence of Prof. Vinay Kumar Pathak, Vice Chancellor, CSJMU, and President, Association of Indian Universities, and Prof. Manindra Agrawal, Director, IIT Kanpur.

The MoU was formally signed by Prof. Surendra Baswana, Program Director, C3iHub, and Head, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Kanpur; Prof. Sanjay Chaudhary, Director, IQAC and VIF, DBRAU; and Prof. Anil Gupta, Director, UCC, DBRAU, Agra.

Prof. Ashu Rani and Prof. Agrawal congratulated the teams at C3iHub and DBRAU, Agra, on this significant occasion.
