Greetings Stargazers !!!

We conducted Mandakini, one of the club’s flagship events, during Techkriti ’24. On March 15th, we conducted Astro Quiz, in two rounds. Round 1 was offline, and top 15 teams from that round were invited for an offline Round 2, held on the same day, where they were further tested for their astronomical prowess and knowledge. On March 16th, we held Observe, Analyze and Solve (OAS), which, as the name suggests, is an Astronomical problem solving competition. Here are some shots of the offline events. 📸✨

We hope you all had a great time participating and learning! 🎆🙌

Reflecting on the amazing experience of Day 2 of the first ever Astronomy fest of IIT Kanpur, AstroVenture'24!

We kicked off things on Day 2 with a mesmerizing talk on the mysteries of Astronomical Image Formation, by Professor Prashant Pathak of the SPASE department, IIT Kanpur. From the magic of light collection through telescopes to the art of image processing, Prof. Pathak’s amazing style of concept explanation was well received by the students.

Now, what is better than to immediately apply the concepts you learn to practical use? You guessed it right! Prof. Pathak’s talk was followed right away by a Make-n-Take Telescope Making Workshop, led by the Astronomy Club members, The club members delved into the intricacies of Telescope Resolution, Magnification etc., before guiding the students to craft a functioning telescope of their own. More than 150 astronomy enthusiasts showed up to the workshop, so much so that the venue had to be changed to L18-19 foyer, because the lecture hall just couldn’t hold that many people! Students were divided into groups of 4-5 people, and all the materials were provided to each group of students. The happy faces of the students, after making their own telescope (which they were allowed to take with them), were indicative of the fun they had during the workshop!

The main event of AstroVenture’24 was a talk by Prof. V. V. Srinivasan, ex-director of ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (will be covered in a separate post).

The final event of the day was an Observation Session on the airstrip, attended by over 1500 people of the campus community (professors, staff members and students). Through the four stationed telescopes, they were made to see various astronomical objects: Jupiter, Orion Nebula, Pleiades etc., to name a few. The attendees were also made aware of amazing astronomical phenomena, star hopping, myths and legends, fantastic facts etc. As an added treat, the students who made telescopes earlier in the workshop were invited to test the telescopes out, and they were elated when they spotted various objects through the hand-made telescope. This event was also attended by Prof. Srinivasan.

This concluded Day 2 of AstroVenture’24. Stay tuned as we share glimpses of the stellar adventures that unfolded.

Reflecting on the incredible journey of Day 1 at the first ever Astronomy fest of IIT Kanpur, AstroVenture'24 (Part 2)!

We continued our journey on Day 1 with a hands-on workshop on analyzing astronomical images, headed by our alumni, Dr. Akshat Singhal, a postdoctoral researcher at HBCSE and key contributor to building the IITK observatory. Once again, students joined both in the Lecture Hall as well as Instagram Live, and were amazed by the various machine learning tools Astronomical Observatories incorporate for image analysis, processing and manipulation. Students also got to know Akshat’s journey and his contributions in the LIGO project, thoroughly enjoying his humorous style. 🚀🔍

BitOrbit: a cutting-edge data processing problem statement, with a prize pool of INR 3000, aimed to unleash the power of machine learning on Observatory data, was also launched after the workshop. It had to be solved using the concepts presented during the workshop, and some basic machine learning. 🌌✨

Aiming to end the adventures of Day 1 on a high note, we presented ‘Cosmic Voyage’, a cosmic treasure hunt filled with fun, mystery, and astronomical surprises, and with a prize pool of INR 3000. Students had to start at the Open Air Theatre (OAT) and journey all around the campus looking for hints to the various mysterious riddles they were provided. Our team members were posted across various significant campus locations, including the Engineering Science Building (ESB), The Crow Structure, Health Centre, etc., to guide (but not help!) students through the various riddles, by providing cryptic hints/questions for them to solve. The event ended with the top 3 teams being quite close, finishing within a margin of a few minutes! 🔥✨

Meanwhile, a three-day book fair (8th-10th March), under AstroVenture’24 also started on the L18-19 Foyer, containing books across various genres.

Stay tuned as we share glimpses of the stellar adventures that unfolded.

Meme Monday 2023: Release #2 (Delayed due to Cygnus release on Monday, 25th)

A wormhole is a hypothetical structure connecting disparate points in spacetime, and is based on a special solution of the Einstein field equations. Wormholes connect two points in spacetime, which means that they would in principle allow travel in time, as well as in space. Imagine two towns on two opposite sides of a mountain. People from these towns would probably have to travel all the way around the mountain to visit one another. But, if they wanted to get there faster, they could dig a tunnel straight through the mountain to create a shortcut. That’s the idea behind a wormhole.

A wormhole is like a tunnel between two distant points in our universe that cuts the travel time from one point to the other. Instead of traveling for many millions of years from one galaxy to another, under the right conditions one could theoretically use a wormhole to cut the travel time down to hours or minutes.

There are the 3 types of wormholes:
• Traversable wormholes are wormholes that can be travelled through and are theoretical tunnels in spacetime, if they exist, could potentially
allow for faster-than-light travel between distant points while avoiding the vast distances between them.
• Non-traversable wormholes are wormholes that cannot be travelled through. Non-traversable wormholes are hypothetical structures in
spacetime that, due to extreme conditions or limitations, cannot be used for faster-than-light travel or any form of passage.
• One-way wormholes are wormholes you can only travel through once, typically due to its asymmetric properties or limitations.
