Greetings Y19!

Hope you all are safe and well!

Being able to articulate your thoughts coherently into words, speaking in public, listening to what other people say, and directing a discussion are some of the important soft skills that one needs to develop. These skills are important not only for performing well in an interview or in a group discussion but also in general in one's personal and professional life.

The Career Development Wing, AnC Council, and the Debate and Discussion Society are organizing a GD (Group Discussion) Weekend on 2nd and 3rd January, to help get familiarized with the concept of a group discussion and also provide you with the right steps to start improving your soft skills. This will be aimed towards the Y19 batch and will be continued with multiple GD weekends in the future in order to give a good experience of several GDs.

The Debate & Discussion Society would hold a short session on argumentation, rebuttals, critical thinking & analysis, and the basic structure of GDs on January 2, 2021, at 12 Noon. The GD weekend would include GDs being conducted on topics covering current affairs. Each GD would include 9-10 students and one moderator. Each GD would last about 30-40 minutes. The moderator will quickly explain how to go about doing a group discussion and then the students would be required to discuss a topic.

In the end, the group will be asked to conclude what they think about the topic, and this will be followed by detailed feedback from the moderator. The only pre-requisite is enthusiasm and a willingness to learn. Utilize this opportunity to familiarize yourself with the basics of a group discussion and clarify any doubts you have regarding the process.

For participating in the event do fill the form :

Your slot details along with links to the session meeting and the GD meetings will be sent beforehand.

Hope to see you in large numbers.

The recent tensions between India & China at the Line of Actual Control have brought to light the expansionist policies of China yet again. These policies by China directly impact the geopolitics of the region, along with giving insight into understanding China as an actor.

Debate & Discussion Society and Students’ Opinion Society are going to conduct an open discussion session on Saturday (03/10/2020) 7:45 PM, exploring different motivations for, and consequences of this strategy. Along with that, the discussion would also focus on India’s future policies as a response to this.

To help you all get up to speed with this, we would have a presentation by Aman Saraf (Y17 DebSoc Coordinator) detailing these initiatives, from which we would lead our discussion.

Fill in this form, and we’ll get in touch. https://rb.gy/hpibt4

Hi everyone!
We organized our first online tournament, the Novice Debating League starting with a workshop on the 14th of May. We were floored by the great response for the event and how well-received it was! Despite the terrible connectivity in Kolkata amidst the cyclone, the teams' cooperative nature helped push the tournament rounds to the finish line.
We'd like to thank everyone who participated, and hope you enjoyed just as much as we did! The top four teams from the standings table went on to the semi-finals, and the two winners were:
1. Aarushi, Keerthana, Namgyal
2. Krishna, Tushar, Mandar
The finals will be held on Sunday, the 31st of May, and we'll be live streaming them. If you're interested to get a feel for what debating is like, or simply want to cheer your friends on, do join us there!

Hi everyone!

With the midsems finally over, we’d like to kick off the event we’ve been building up to for weeks - the Novice Debating League! This tournament is intended to give you your first taste of collegiate debating, and (hopefully) make you fall in love with the activity.

We’d like to invite you to register via this link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeHgB2xDTmGFUjS1fm5eWoMluqm_WKukrmK4OQx14Kh8ovqkg/viewform?usp=sf_link.

The format of the competition will be as follows - there will be a set of preliminary rounds of debate, where teams of three will face off against each other in the Asian Parliamentary format. After this, the top four teams on the leaderboard will “break”, and progress to the final rounds, where exciting prizes await them. If you’re unfamiliar with the format and or would like more details about the structure, please refer to this excellent guide to Asian Parliamentary debates:http://www.monashdebaters.com/downloads/Schools%20Training%20Guide.pdf

You may register individually or as a team, if you already have friends you would like to participate with. If you fall in the former category, we shall be making teams for you.

Please note that it is not mandatory for you to have attended our introductory sessions to participate. If you have any concerns or queries, please feel free to contact any of the coordinators or secretaries.

Only 1 member from each team has to register for the team. They will be the point of contact for the team. If you are unable to form teams, leave the details of the other members blank and register only for yourself. We'll make teams on the first day of NDL for those who have less than 3 members in....
