ith grant and continuing support from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, Katra. Govt., of India has supported our projects and the industry has been closely involved in our R&D activities. The academic pattern, syllabi and evaluation procedure has been adopted from Indian Institutes of Technology. The University has signed Memorandum of Understanding with various national and international academic, professional and research institutes as well as industry to augment the learning process and to develop research activities. The University has four Colleges consisting of twelve Schools which promote six Undergraduate and nine Postgraduate programmes besides Ph.D. The University has the unique distinction of being inaugurated by the President of India in the year 2004 and the first convocation addressed by the Prime Minister of India in the year 2008. This alone speaks of the quality of infrastructure and education at this university. Being a fully residential university, the campus provides comfortable single, double and triple seated accommodation to all the students (triple seated accommodation is offered to all new admissions at UG level). There are sufficient in-door and out-door sports facilities available. The state of the Art Auditorium with seating capacity for 1000 persons is an excellent center for academic, cultural and social functions. Different Forums and Clubs like Music, Dance, Drama, Quiz, Adventure, Mind-meet forum etc help students to utilize their spare time in a more creative and innovative way. The Officer's Club takes care of the recreation facilities for the faculty and staff. The campus provides an ideal atmosphere for healthy interactions and competition among students and interaction with faculty and professionals from corporate world and other leading institutes. Our students are encouraged to take part in extra-curricular activities and every effort is made to expose them to the competitive world. There are qualified faculty members capable of providing all the necessary inputs to more than 1000 students admitted purely on the basis of merit. The admissions are made on AIEEE ranking, CAT/ MAT scores, written tests, interviews and group discussions etc, wherever applicable. Students from twenty different states of the country epitomize a healthy amalgamation of different cultures, religions and languages on the campus. The campus is a classic example of a mini Cultural India with students from even far off places all the way from Kashmir to Kerala. The University is also making an effort to create an extensive university-industry cooperation for economic growth of the area as well as the rest of the country. There are many on going research projects with assistance from many supporting institutions.

Hariyali Teej, one of the most cherished festivals marking the arrival of the monsoon season, symbolizes happiness, prosperity, love, and harmony, while celebrating the beauty of nature and India's rich cultural heritage.The venue was transformed into a sea of green as participants arrived dressed in elegant traditional attire, embodying the true spirit of the festival. Participants were recognized and celebrated for their enthusiasm, confidence, and creativity. The centrepiece of the celebration was the crowning of the Teej Queen, along with two runners-up, who were felicitated for their grace, confidence, and overall presentation. The announcement was met with great excitement, adding to the memorable atmosphere of the evening.The celebration concluded with a sumptuous dinner, giving participants the opportunity to unwind, connect, and strengthen bonds of friendship over shared conversation and festive cheer. The event drew to a close on a high note, leaving attendees with cherished memories and a renewed appreciation for Indian traditions and cultural values. Student Induction Programme 2026–27 Commences at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University
Katra, August 2026: Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) commenced its two-week Student Induction Programme for the newly admitted students of the academic session 2026–27, marking the beginning of an enriching and transformative journey for the students at the University. The induction programme is designed to provide the newly admitted students with a meaningful introduction to the University’s academic environment, institutional ethos, opportunities for holistic development, and the diverse dimensions of university life. The two-week programme will provide students with opportunities to interact with faculty members, senior officials and fellow students while familiarising themselves with the academic, cultural, sports, professional and extracurricular ecosystem of SMVDU. The programme commenced with a warm welcome address by Dr. Shafaq Rasool, Associate Dean (Academic Affairs), who welcomed the newly admitted students and encouraged them to actively engage with the opportunities and experiences that the University has to offer.
Prof. (Dr.) Pragati Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, SMVDU, graced the occasion and addressed the students, urging them to strive for excellence and remain prepared to navigate the challenges of a rapidly evolving, AI-driven and highly competitive world. Drawing upon several inspiring examples, the Vice-Chancellor motivated the students to believe in their abilities, embrace continuous learning, develop adaptability and pursue excellence in their chosen fields. He encouraged them to look beyond conventional boundaries of learning and emerge as responsible, innovative and confident individuals. The students also received valuable insights from Prof. Balbir Singh, Dean, Academic Affairs, who highlighted the importance of academic discipline, continuous learning, active participation and responsible engagement in university life. He also introduced students to the wide range of opportunities available at SMVDU, including sports, NCC, NSS, the Board of Professional Activities and the Board of Cultural Activities, encouraging them to explore their interests and develop their talents beyond the classroom. Various Deans and Heads of Schools extended their warm greetings to the newly admitted students and congratulated them on embarking upon this important new phase of their lives. They encouraged the students to pursue their aspirations with confidence, dedication and self-belief while making full use of the academic and developmental opportunities available at SMVDU.
The inaugural session was attended by several dignitaries, including Shri Ajay Kumar Sharma, Registrar; Ms. Kajal Jasrotia, Finance Officer; Dr. B. B. Jindal, Associate Dean (Academic Affairs–Engineering), along with Deans, Heads of the schools, faculty members and members of the Admission committee. The programme concluded with a formal Vote of Thanks delivered by Dr. Pooja Sharma, Associate Professor, School of Computer Science and Engineering, who expressed her sincere gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor, senior officials, Deans, Heads of Schools, faculty members, students and all those associated with the successful organisation of the induction programme.The commencement of the two-week Student Induction Programme marks a significant beginning to the students’ journey at SMVDU. He felicitated the achievers and delivered a keynote address that outlined a vision for the University’s future and its role in nation-building.Extending warm greetings to the University family, the Lieutenant Governor described the day as a celebration of foresight, resolve, and sustained efforts that has transformed SMVDU into a centre of knowledge, innovation, and social responsibility. He emphasised that the University, blessed by Mata Vaishno Devi, carries in its name the tradition of devotion, strength, and faith, inspiring millions across India and the world.

The Lieutenant Governor said that a university is not built by its buildings but by ideas, dreams, and possibilities. He highlighted the role of visionary leadership, dedicated faculty, and curious students in shaping institutions that nurture not only knowledge but also humility, sensitivity, and responsibility towards society.

Reflecting on SMVDU’s journey, the Lieutenant Governor lauded its achievements in education and research. He noted that faculty members have secured around 140 research projects, including international collaborations, and established a state-of-the-art AI and Deep Learning Lab. The University has received 14 patents, incubated 30 start-ups, and launched innovative programmes such as peer-learning. He urged the institution to strengthen industry–academia relations by organising open-house meetings to commercialise patents and innovations.
