What is a flagship species?

A flagship species is a species selected to act as an ambassador, icon or symbol for a defined habitat, issue, campaign or environmental cause.

By focusing on, and achieving conservation of that species, the status of many other species which share its habitat – or are vulnerable to the same threats - may also be improved.

Flagship species may or may not be keystone species and may or may not be good indicators of biological process.

Flagship species are also featured in publicity material about conservation because they are appealing to the public

Examples: Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris), the giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca), the Golden lion tamarin (Leontopithecus rosalia), the African elephant (Loxodonta sp.) and Asian elephant (Elephas maximus).

Today is World Mosquito Day

Know how to identify Ades, Anopheles and Culex mosquitoes??

Aedes mosquitoes are the easiest to identify. They are black and have white patches.
Culex and Anopheles are yellow-ish, but you can identify them by observing their resting position. Anopheles mosquitoes have a ~45 degree angle, while Culex stay parallel to the surface.
