The Technology transfer Group congratulates Prof. Suman Chakraborty, Dean, Research & Development (R&D), IIT Kharagpur, for receiving the prestigious Infosys Prize in Engineering and Computer Science for his pioneering work in elucidating the interaction of fluid mechanics, interfacial phenomena, and electromechanics at the micro- and nanoscale.

It is indeed a great pleasure to share that Professor Suman Chakraborty, Dean, Research and Development (R&D), IIT Kharagpur has been conferred the Infosys Prize 2022 in Engineering & Computer Science for his exceptional contributions and pioneering work in elucidating the interaction of fluid mechanics, interfacial phenomena, and electromechanics at micro and nanoscale.

Prof. Chakraborty’s research interest lies in micro/nano scale fluid dynamics and its applications focused towards sustainable technology goals for promoting good health and well-being of the underserved. The inventor of ‘Paper and Pencil Microfluidics’ technology - a new class of electrically-manipulative miniaturized devices that does not require any sophisticated fabrication-facility, has also innovated a biomimetic tumour-on-a-chip technology for unleashing the mechanisms of cancer progression. Prof. Suman remarked, “It is one of the toughest and most coveted prize. These recognitions drives me to work harder. The objective of any research should be scholastic, scientific and technical breakthrough but it should also be translated for the common people in whatever way possible.”

No one can live life without learning something. What you learn and experience can often determine your success or failure in life. Effortful learning combined with real-life on the job experience is a winning formula for success. Your choices and your experiences help create the person that you are
So we have Mr Sampad Laha, PhD scholar to share his experience of the entire process of patent filing in IIT Kharagpur.
We are very thankful to Mr Sampad who shared his experience and told us about the opportunities at IIT Kharagpur.
We hope these workshops and the recordings could help the student community.

Intellectual property rights help protect creations of the mind that include inventions, literary or artistic work, images, symbols, etc. If we create a product, publish a book, or find a new drug, intellectual property rights ensure that we should benefit from our work. These rights protect our creation or work from unfair use by others. We had Prof. Tapas Kumar Bandyopadhyay, who discussed different types of intellectual property rights and learned how they can help researchers in the workshop conducted by Technology Transfer Group, IIT KGP.
He spoke about the importance of IP Day, Young Innovators and Creation of Mind. Further, he discussed patent, Industrial design, Copyright, Trademark, IC-Layout Design, and Geographical Indication.

A fear of a discovery being scooped can create a race between researchers to publish their results as a peer-reviewed paper. But if there is a commercial goal in mind, patent filing should come first: patent laws generally favor whomever is first to file an application that completely discloses a fresh invention.
Researchers should keep in mind three important elements that make an idea patentable.
The invention must be new, there must be some inventive step of ‘non-obviousness’, and the disclosure in a patent must be sufficient for a skilled person to reproduce the invention with only routine effort.

Moving further, we have Ms. Richa Mishra who shared her experiences from the Researcher's Perspective and discussed about Researcher’s IP ladder, Invention Disclosure, Researcher’s aids in patent filing, How to start, How to proceed, IP Cell IIT KGP and about her mistakes so the the students couldn’t repeat that mistakes.

Innovation plays a crucial role in addressing local challenges, and young innovators are changing this landscape with the power of their ideas and ambitions for the future, including the future of health. With adequate support and IP protection, young innovators can mobilise and provoke change, and help advance the fields of science, business, and innovation to improve health outcomes. The Technology Transfer Group conducted workshops on 26th April to familiarize the students with the intellectual property rights and their aspects on the occasion of The World Intellectual Property (IP) Day held on 26th April. This year's theme for World Intellectual Property Day 2022 was IP and Young People creating for a Better Future.

Prof M. Padmavati discussed the aspects of IP in higher educational institutions and emphasised the role of students as stakeholders in IP. Here is the recording of the workshop which could help the community.
