The Vinod Gupta School of Management was the first school of management to be setup within the IIT system. It was initiated by a distinguished alumnus & a Life Time Fellow of the Institute, Mr. Vinod Gupta, whose generous endowment was matched by liberal support from the Government of India. The founders felt that VGSOM could play a pioneering role in creating management schools within the IIT sys

tem and offered unique programmes blending management and technology that would develop managers who would be able to understand and appreciate both the critical technology related issues and their management implications. This original concept has now been vindicated by the setting up of management programmes in other IITs as well. Our vision is to develop as a centre of excellence in management education and research catering to the needs of organizations in different sectors of the economy with special emphasis on technology driven and knowledge based industries that are characterized by high degrees of globalization, dynamism, complexity and innovation.

Seventy-five years ago, a vision began. Today, it stands as a distinguished institution shaping the nation.

As IIT Kharagpur marks its 75th Anniversary, we celebrate a legacy of intellectual rigour, academic excellence, pioneering research, innovation, and commitment to national development.

From the first IIT of independent India to a globally recognised institution, IIT Kharagpur has transformed knowledge into impact. Its alumni, faculty, researchers, and students have contributed across science, technology, industry, governance, entrepreneurship, and more—carrying a legacy that extends far beyond campus.

Yet, its greatest strength lies not only in its achievements, but in its continued aspiration—advancing knowledge, nurturing transformative minds, and serving the nation through excellence.

At the heart of this journey lies its timeless motto:

**“योगः कर्मसु कौशलम्” — **Yogah Karmasu Kaushalam
“Excellence in action is Yoga.”

A philosophy reminding us that excellence is not just an outcome, but a way of working with skill, discipline, dedication, and purpose.

As we mark this milestone, we honour the past, celebrate the present, and look ahead to a future driven by knowledge, innovation, and service to humanity.

Who actually drives a movement on social media: the organisation that frames the cause, or the peers who mobilise alongside one another?

The answer, it turns out, changes depending on when you ask.

We are delighted to host Prof. Sudip Bhattacharjee (University of Connecticut) at the Vinod Gupta School of Management, IIT Kharagpur, for a research seminar on the lifecycle of digital mobilisation.

Drawing on 12 months of longitudinal data from Sleeping Giants, an online-only movement that pressed advertisers to withdraw from a controversial news platform, the research traces a striking arc: mobilisation begins leader-led, turns peer-led as the movement grows, and swings back towards leaders as it declines. The work integrates Collective Action Framing Theory with Connective Action Theory, and carries real implications for anyone trying to amplify, redirect, or contain an emerging movement.

Prof. Bhattacharjee is Professor of Operations & Information Management at UConn’s School of Business and a Senior Research Fellow at the U.S. Census Bureau. He is also one of our own: B.Tech (Hons.) 1990, IIT Kharagpur. A homecoming of sorts.

Call for Papers - ICFIF 2026

The International Conference on Frontiers of Infrastructure Finance comes to the Vinod Gupta School of Management, IIT Kharagpur, 20–22 November 2026.

Infrastructure is the engine of development. For most developing economies, the binding constraint isn't demand for infrastructure - it's the finance available to build it. ICFIF 2026 brings researchers, industry, government and policy onto one floor to work through where the money comes from, what it costs, who carries the risk, and which instruments move a project from proposal to tarmac.

Five thematic tracks:
01 · Capital Markets & International Finance
02 · Project Finance, PPPs & Financing Strategy
03 · Transport & Energy Infrastructure
04 · Social Infrastructure, Microfinance & Inclusion
05 · Policy, Governance & Sustainable Infrastructure

Over three days: 3 keynotes, 3 panel discussions, parallel paper sessions across all five tracks, and a cultural evening on campus.

Two Best Paper Awards in each track - winners receive a citation at the closing ceremony and a full refund of their registration fee. Every submitted paper is automatically considered, judged by an international panel.

Key dates
Paper submission: 15 September 2026
Acceptance notice: 20 September 2026
Registration closes: 30 September 2026

Max 5,000 words, IEEE format, abstract of 200 words or fewer. Selected papers to be published in an EconLit-indexed journal or edited volume.

Submit to [email protected]

Do share with colleagues and research scholars working on infrastructure, finance and public policy - and tag someone whose work belongs in one of these tracks.
