Ancient Wisdom. Modern Minds. One Evolving India.

Can we embrace modernity without losing touch with our roots? Can scientific temper and spiritual inquiry coexist?

On the special occasion of Durga Puja, Prof. Suman Chakraborty, Director, IIT Kharagpur, accompanied by Indian and international students of the Institute, travelled from Kharagpur to Kolkata for a thought-provoking interaction with Sansad Television on “Roots and Reason: Tradition Meets Modernity.”

Set against the vibrant cultural backdrop of Kolkata, the interaction brought together diverse perspectives on India's rich civilisational heritage, spirituality, scientific inquiry and the evolving outlook of Gen Z.

From traditional knowledge systems and ethical values to innovation, critical thinking and contemporary education, the dialogue explored how India's timeless traditions can inspire young minds while nurturing a progressive and scientific outlook.

The participation of Indian and international students added a unique cross-cultural dimension, reflecting how education transcends geographical boundaries while fostering mutual appreciation of heritage, knowledge and shared human values.

One Walk. One Pledge. One Commitment. A Nasha Mukt KGP!

Taking a collective stand for a healthier, safer and drug-free campus, IIT Kharagpur's Institutional Anti-Drug Cell successfully organised the Nasha Mukt KGP Walk & Pledge at the Technology Students' Gymkhana.

With enthusiastic participation from students, faculty, staff and campus residents, the 2.2 km awareness walk traversed prominent campus landmarks, reinforcing a powerful message of unity against narcotics and synthetic drug abuse.

The initiative culminated in a collective Anti-Drug Pledge, followed by participation in the official NCORD E-Pledge, reaffirming the KGP community's commitment to a drug-free environment.

Sharing his message, Prof. Suman Chakraborty, Director, IIT Kharagpur, emphasised: "A Nasha Mukt campus is built not only on vigilance but on trust, where any student who is struggling knows they can reach out early, without fear or judgement."

Aligned with the Government of India's Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, the initiative reinforced that prevention begins with awareness, but lasting change comes through compassion, timely support and collective responsibility.

From Street Vendor to Smart Entrepreneur!

Marking a significant milestone in its Platinum Jubilee journey, IIT Kharagpur inaugurated ‘Nagar Udyam’, a pioneering Smart Food Vending Ecosystem Initiative through SETU Cloud Kitchen Connect, aimed at transforming grassroots livelihoods through innovation, sustainability and technology.

Conceptualised by Prof. Suman Chakraborty, Director, IIT Kharagpur, the campus pilot was inaugurated in the presence of Chief Guest Shri Siddharth Singh Dangi, IPS, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Kharagpur; Prof. Uday Shankar, Chairperson, SETU; and Mrs. Sarmishtha Chakraborty, along with faculty members, staff, students and local entrepreneurs.

At its heart is an innovative, solar-enabled mobile smart cart designed to empower micro-entrepreneurs with mobility, hygienic food practices, digital payments and greater financial inclusion. Designed to be towed by a motorcycle and stored at home after business hours, the model reimagines street vending without the need for permanent roadside infrastructure.

Through SETU Cloud Kitchen Connect, IIT Kharagpur envisions taking this campus pilot towards a scalable model for sustainable street vending across West Bengal.

Innovating for a Greener Tomorrow | IIT Kharagpur 🌱

Turning ideas into impact, IIT Kharagpur recently organised the Campus Sustainability Challenge under the ongoing Swachhata Hi Seva campaign and Special Campaign 6, reinforcing its commitment to building a cleaner, greener and more sustainable campus.

The initiative brought together enthusiastic participation from students, faculty and staff, encouraging innovative, practical and actionable solutions to integrate sustainability into everyday campus life.

The challenge culminated in an engaging Jury Pitch Round, where participants presented their ideas and perspectives towards creating a more environmentally conscious campus community.

The initiative was convened by Prof. Vinay Yadav, Nodal Officer, Special Campaign 6, under the guidance of Prof. B. K. Dubey, Dean, Campus and Community Development, IIT Kharagpur.

Connecting Minds. Celebrating Legacy. Shaping the Future of Computing.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), IIT Kharagpur, recently brought together its distinguished alumni community at Koramangala Club, Bengaluru, celebrating a shared legacy of excellence, innovation and leadership.

The gathering featured reflections by former Director, IIT Kharagpur, Prof. Partha Pratim Chakrabarti on the Department’s remarkable journey, followed by Prof. Niloy Ganguly, Head, Department of CSE, who highlighted its evolving academic, research and industry initiatives.

Dr. Anand Deshpande, distinguished alumnus and Founder, Chairman & Managing Director of Persistent Systems, shared insights from his entrepreneurial journey and his vision for IIT Kharagpur in the computation-first era.

An engaging alumni panel, moderated by Prof. Animesh Mukherjee, brought together Aneesh Reddy, Founder, MD & CEO, Capillary Technologies; Raviteja Dodda, CEO & Co-founder, MoEngage; Ranjita Bhagwan, Principal Engineer, Google; and Sourav Mukherji, Dean & Professor, IIM Bangalore. The discussion explored their inspiring journeys from IIT Kharagpur to leadership positions, alongside emerging opportunities in AI, innovation and entrepreneurship.

Beyond reconnecting with their alma mater, the gathering opened new avenues for alumni–institute collaboration in cutting-edge research, AI innovation, student fellowships, upskilling, infrastructure development and entrepreneurship.

When fluid mechanics meets the perfect cup of chai, campus innovation takes on a whole new flavour.

What begins as a simple cup of chai can become a story of entrepreneurship, community, and sustainable change.

At IIT Kharagpur, Prof. Suman Chakraborty, Director of the Institute, brings a distinctive perspective to this everyday ritual. After all, when a fluid mechanics expert makes chai, one might reasonably expect the flow dynamics to be exceptional, the mixing to be precise, and the final outcome to be nothing short of remarkable!

Inspired by this spirit of turning everyday experiences into meaningful opportunities, the Smart Food Vending Ecosystem Initiative, through SETU Cloud Kitchen Connect, seeks to create a more inclusive and sustainable campus—one that supports grassroots entrepreneurs, makes affordable refreshments accessible to students, and brings the campus community closer together.

Beyond the chai and sandwiches lies a larger purpose: nurturing livelihoods, encouraging responsible food practices, and demonstrating how thoughtful institutional initiatives can create an impact far beyond their immediate setting.

Because innovation doesn’t always have to begin in a laboratory. Sometimes, it begins at a tea stall—with a good idea, a generous serving, and perhaps a little fluid mechanics.

At IIT Kharagpur, even a cup of chai can be an exercise in engineering excellence.

Empowering Communities. Preserving Nature. Transforming Livelihoods.

Bringing science closer to society, IIT Kharagpur organised a Stakeholder Interaction and Knowledge Dissemination Workshop under the DST-SEED-supported project aimed at strengthening sustainable livelihoods among tribal communities in Mayurbhanj, Odisha.

The workshop commenced with an address by Prof. Jayanta Mukhopadhyay, Dean (Strategy and Analytics), and was organised by an interdisciplinary IIT Kharagpur team comprising Dr. Sayak Roychowdhury (Project PI), Prof. Bhagirath Behera (Joint PI), Prof. Soumya Kanti Ghosh (Co-PI), Prof. Pulak Mishra (Co-PI), and Dr. Pritha Datta (Co-PI).

The deliberations brought together Shri Sumit Kar, IFS, Deputy Director, Simlipal South Wildlife Division, various district officials, scientists, NGO representatives, grassroots entrepreneurs and community stakeholders.

From indigenous knowledge and biodiversity conservation to mushroom cultivation, integrated farming, renewable energy and rural entrepreneurship, the workshop explored how scientific interventions can create sustainable economic opportunities while preserving local ecosystems.

IIT Kharagpur is proud to serve as the Zonal Anchor Institute for the Eastern Region under the SEVA FIRST INNOVATION CHALLENGE 2026, an initiative of the Sewa Sankalp Maha Abhiyan, supporting the State-Level Conclave and Regional/District Conclaves.

Bringing together innovators from West Bengal, Bihar and Jharkhand, the challenge invites students, researchers, young professionals, startups and community groups to develop practical, impactful solutions to real-world local problems.

Selected innovators will also receive mentorship, prototype support, piloting and incubation opportunities.
