AN APPEAL
***************************************************************
We bring to your kind notice the plight of our colleague and friend at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, India, Mr. Basudev Sahoo. He is 22 years old and is pursuing his M.Sc.(final year in the 2-year M.Sc. course) in the Department of Physics. Mr. Basudev Sahoo is a resident of Madan Mohan Malviya Hall of Residence. He has an outstanding academic record. He was the topper (first class first) in his Bachelor's programme in the Vidyasagar University, West Bengal. He also holds the top third position in his M.Sc. course at IIT Kharagpur with a CGPA of 9.07. Personally, he is very helpful, hardworking and decent. He is from a humble background. His father being a simple farmer is unable bear his treatment cost with a monthly income of 8000/-.
About two months back in June, 2015, Basudev was diagnosed, by Bone marrow aspiration study, to have haematological malignancy, acute lymphoblastic leukemia - CALLA positive B lymphoblastic leukemia in Peerless Hospitex Hospital and Research Center in Kolkata by Dr. Ajoy Krishna Sarkar. The hospital authority then recommended him to get admitted in the Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai. They prescribed him to have chemotherapies and supportive cares. He has already received a few cycles of chemotherapy under supervision of Dr. Siddarth W. Turkar. Dr. Hari Menon; MD, DM Medical Superintendent/AMS,Professor, TMH,Dept. of Medical Oncology, has informed us that his intent of treatment to be curative. (Medical reports are attached).
In his medical notes Dr. Hari Menon has mentioned that,
“22 year old student at IIT kharagpur doing his Msc in physics, presenting with recent onset fever and weakness for which he consulted at his local place. He was started with antibiotics. However his CBC revealed leukocytosis of 17000 with peripheral circulating atypical cells . there was thrombocytopenia too. He was subjected to a FCM which was suggestive of ALL. He came to TMH for further evaluation. Clinically patient has a PS1, No pallor, Generalized LNE non bulky. Chest normal, CVS NAD. Spleen palpable 5 cm and no hepatomegaly. CNS is normal. No cranial nerve involvement clinically. The CBC reveals leukocytosis with thrombocytopenia.”
The estimated expenditure of the whole treatment is around 20lakh while the hospital authority is demanding about 5.5 lac for immediate actions and they have said they will need the same periodically with a period of six months of medication.
However we have successfully managed the first course of amount for him and he is under medication right now. In that contributions the Student Brotherhood Fund has provided an amount of 2.9 lacs for him.
A huge amount of money is still required for the next cycles of treatment. Please donate some amount. The target is enormous, but every contribution counts! Sincere Thanks from the bottom of my heart. We hope Basudev can win this race with your kind support!
