Dear Readers,
We deeply mourn the sad demise of our colleagues and students in different departments of the
University of Calcutta and from across the country. At this juncture when we are witnessing
vicissitudes of fortune, it is but natural that our spirits are at their all-time low. However, we have to
be strong and support every little initiative that boosts augments and cements our faith in humanity.
“This Too Shall Pass”. Our COVID warriors who are sweating day in and day out to save lives need
our support, care, and co-operation, and the least we can do is to stick to the safety protocols to keep
ourselves safe and secure. Further, let us celebrate the fact that even amid devastation caused by
“Yash”, fighting all odds, our students didn’t lose enthusiasm to continue with the building of a strong
system of togetherness. Without the active participation of the students and teachers alike, a
continuation of this newsletter would not have been possible. I take this opportunity to once again
thank all the spectrum of contributors of this newsletter, especially the students, irrespective of
departments or institutes, who have proved to be instrumental in making this initiative highly
productive and successful. I am sorry that we failed to accommodate all the accepted articles in the
current issue but want to assure everyone that they will be published in the following issues, on
priority!


I would also like to thank the administration and management of our
university and department who toll hard in ensuring the smooth, seamless functioning of the
department, even during this period of constraints.
Once again readers, thank you for being there for us as a constant source of inspiration and
motivation!

Dear All,

It gives me a lot of pleasure to inform you that for our past editions, we have received several critical acclaims and responses from scientists at different Food processing institutes and faculties of home sciences and life sciences from various national and international Universities. The editorial staff feels honoured and obliged with such comments and positive responses from its readers.

In response to the suggestion made by a renowned Professor and head of the department, we are introducing a section on food entrepreneurship. We have identified and chosen themes for this section in the months to come. For May 2021, the theme under this section would be Innovative food packaging. Hope to receive new innovative ideas on food packaging, food packaging materials, and other interesting aspects relevant to this domain. Furthermore, according to the request of Prof. D.K Bhattacharyya, Ex-Professor of the University of Calcutta, Department of Chemical Technology, Ex-Adjunct Professor of School of Food processing and Nutrition, IIEST, Shibpur, a new section on Glorious Minds of India has been appended. The April, 2021 issue has been attached herewith.

Chron’s disease (CD) is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In 2017, there were more than 6.8 million cases of IBD globally. Increasing incidence of IBD and CD has been reported in many Asian countries including India. A multicentre study in India reported a rise in number of CD cases from fewer than 5000 in 1987 to 21,061 in 2001 which gives an indirect estimate of the disease burden.
Management of CD is challenging and requires a multidisciplinary approach.
