On the 8th of April, the Debating Society (DEBSOC) of The Bhawanipur Education Society College (BESC), presented the fourth edition of the Novice Debate where both amateur and experienced members of DEBSOC gathered in room 129C under the guidance of Dr. Suman Kumar Mukerjee, Director General of BESC and the Chairperson for this debate and the adjudication by Professor Soumya Suvra Das from the Journalism Department. The motion stated – ‘Traditional classroom lectures are becoming redundant nowadays’. Dr Suman Kumar Mukherjee imparted exceptional tips to the rookies as to how to approach a debate and enunciate their opinions with confidence and poise without duplicating the points. He stated, “You will not become the best speaker of the city with just one debate. It will develop over time.”
One by one, the participants came up to the podium and articulated their views in favour and opposition of the given motion alternatively. One of the debaters, Ruqaiya Kishangunjwala put forward the idea of online learning which was acknowledged by Dr. Mukerjee. He confirmed that the college will adopt this notion and make a committee of interested students to manage the given task. The agenda was pushed forward by Kanishk Khandelwal who spoke against the motion and said, "Wisdom is not something that we acquire on our own; it has to be taught to us by a person wiser than us.”
The adjudicator announced the winners' names among the novices and lauded and motivated those who could not express their thoughts properly. After all a person who never made a mistake never tried anything new. It takes courage to break the resistance of one’s nerves and go forward to deliver a speech with all eyes on him\her.
The rankings are:
1st — Tripti Dhanania (for)
2nd – Ankush Saraogi (against)
3rd – Ruq Kish (for)
4th – Kanishk Khandelwal (against) and Bushra Hasan (for)
6th – Akritdeep Sachdeva (against)
The podium was taken over by the floor speakers who were fluent, clearheaded and tranquil. The speakers voiced their different opinions on the motion. “Instead of pointing fingers at teachers, we should look into ourselves that how much interest we show during our classes”, said Ayushi Sharma. “Curiosity is the fundamental portion of knowledge”, said Rushabh Shah.
The rankings were:
1st – Rushabh Shah
2nd – Ayushi Sharma
