The Department of Economics, in collaboration with IQAC, hosted the Third Debes Mukherjee Memorial Lecture on 12 December 2025 at the Sesquicentenary Seminar Hall. The annual lecture series honours Prof. Debes Mukherjee, a respected former Teacher-in-Charge whose contribution to the department remains deeply cherished.

This year’s speaker was Dr. Pariksh*t Ghosh, Professor at the Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi — one of India’s leading voices in public policy research. Delivering a talk titled “Public Policy in an Unequal World,” Dr. Ghosh explored how economic inequality shapes social outcomes, influences policymaking, and challenges governments trying to balance growth with justice.

He broke down the global and Indian dimensions of inequality with clarity — discussing wealth concentration, labour-market divides, access to public goods, and the trade-offs policymakers face in designing inclusive programmes. Students and faculty interacted enthusiastically, making the session intellectually rich and thought-provoking.

The event reaffirmed the department’s commitment to nurturing critical thinking and engaging with pressing real-world issues.
A heartfelt remembrance of Prof. Debes Mukherjee added emotional depth to the gathering, reminding everyone of his academic legacy and dedication to teaching.

A big thank you to all who joined and made the lecture a success.
