Golden Jubilee Celebration of NIELIT Kolkata

NIELIT Kolkata celebrated its Golden Jubilee on 18 September 2026 at the Salt Lake Campus of the Centre, commemorating five decades of its distinguished journey in the field of computer education, training and technology.

The Centre was originally established as the Regional Computer Centre (RCC), Calcutta on 17 September 1976. As Vishwakarma Puja coincidentally fell on 18 September 2026, the Centre celebrated its Golden Jubilee along with the Puja, making the occasion a unique blend of institutional commemoration and festive celebration.

A programme was organised as a special occasion to remember the rich institutional history of the Centre, honour the contribution of its former and present stakeholders, and celebrate the achievements made over the past fifty years.

The programme commenced with an address by Shri Goutam Saha, Director-In-Charge, NIELIT Kolkata. In his speech, Shri Saha reminisced about the history and evolution of the Centre, taking the audience back to the period when it functioned as the erstwhile Regional Computer Centre (RCC), Calcutta. He recalled the significant developments that shaped the Centre during its formative years and spoke about the subsequent merger of RCC, Calcutta with the DOEACC Society, which eventually became part of the institutional journey leading to the present-day NIELIT.

Shri Saha also acknowledged the valuable contributions of the old stakeholders of the Centre, including former officers, scientists, employees, faculty members, technical personnel and other associates who played important roles in building the institution over the years. His address paid tribute to their dedication and highlighted how their collective efforts laid the foundation upon which the Centre has continued to grow.

Following the address of the Director-In-Charge, Shri Tapas Trivedy, Scientist-E, delivered his speech. Recalling his association with the Centre and sharing his reflections on its journey, Shri Trivedy brought a personal and cultural dimension to the celebration. He subsequently rendered a Rabindra Sangeet, adding a special touch of Bengali cultural heritage to the Golden Jubilee programme.

This was followed by a detailed presentation and speech by Dr. Sarmistha Bhattacharjee, Scientist-E, who traced the journey of the Centre through the decades. Her presentation covered the various stages of the Centre's institutional development and highlighted important milestones, changes and achievements that have contributed to its present identity. The journey from the days of RCC, Calcutta through its subsequent institutional transformation and evolution into NIELIT Kolkata was presented as a story of continuity, adaptation and growth.

As a mark of appreciation and affection, Shri Goutam Saha, Shri Tapas Trivedy and Dr. Sarmistha Bhattacharjee were greeted with beautiful bouquets during the celebration.

The speakers collectively recalled the Centre's rich legacy and emphasised that an institution's journey is shaped not merely by its buildings, programmes and achievements, but also by the people who contribute to it. The Golden Jubilee therefore served as an occasion to remember and acknowledge the contributions of generations of personnel and stakeholders associated with NIELIT Kolkata.

The programme was anchored by Dr. Kalyan Baital, Scientist-D, who conducted the proceedings in a graceful and engaging manner.

The formal proceedings were followed by a cake-cutting ceremony, marking the completion of fifty years of the Centre's journey. The cake-cutting provided a warm and celebratory conclusion to the programme and symbolised the shared legacy, camaraderie and continued aspirations of the NIELIT Kolkata family.

The Golden Jubilee celebration was held alongside Vishwakarma Puja, and the festive observance was followed by a sumptuous lunch, bringing together the members of the Centre in a spirit of fellowship and celebration.

The Salt Lake building of the Centre was beautifully decorated with lights, balloons and other festive decorations on the occasion, creating a vibrant and celebratory atmosphere.

The celebration of the Golden Jubilee was thus not merely an anniversary event but an occasion for remembering the past, recognising the contributions of those who built the institution, celebrating the present and looking forward to the future. The event reflected the enduring legacy of NIELIT Kolkata and its continuing commitment to the fields of information technology, computer education, skill development and technological advancement.
