The Agro-Tourism Workshop-cum-Fair - "Prakritir Panthashala" (Nature's Retreat) was held on 6 August 2026 at B***r Pakhi, Jhargram, jointly organized by SAMETI-West Bengal, Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Narendrapur, and the Extension Education Institute (NE Region), Government of India.

In today's rapidly urbanizing world, where millions live amidst concrete jungles, agro-tourism is more relevant than ever. Many young people have never experienced a paddy field, touched fertile soil, or witnessed the richness of an agro-ecosystem. Agro-tourism serves as a Nature's Living Classroom, offering firsthand experiences of agriculture, soils, biodiversity, water resources, ecosystem services, and rural livelihoods. It reconnects people with nature, nurtures environmental consciousness, and fosters a deeper appreciation for the farmers who sustain our nation.

Beyond its educational value, agro-tourism is emerging as a powerful catalyst for rural transformation and sustainable livelihoods. It diversifies farmers' income, promotes entrepreneurship, preserves local traditions, and creates employment opportunities for rural youth and women. By integrating agriculture with hospitality, local cuisine, handicrafts, and indigenous knowledge, it strengthens the rural economy while promoting sustainable resource management and responsible tourism.

The inaugural session was graced by Shri Rajesh Mahato, Hon'ble Minister of State (Independent Charge), Department of Animal Resources Development & Fisheries, Government of West Bengal; Dr. Ashok K. Patra, Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya; Shri Lakshmikanta Sahu, Hon'ble MLA; Dr. Sourendranath Das, Director, SAMETI-West Bengal; Dr. R. Bordoloi, Director, EEI-NER, AAU, Guwahati; Dr. Manabendra Roy, Director of Extension Education, BCKV; along with senior government officials, scientists, extension professionals, entrepreneurs, trainees, students, progressive farmers, and representatives from academia and industry.

The evening's captivating Putul Naach (Traditional Puppet Show) and soulful Baul Sangeet (Traditional Baul Folk Music) beautifully reflected the vibrant cultural heritage of rural Bengal, making the experience truly authentic and memorable. Our villages are not merely centres of agricultural productionโ€”they are living repositories of culture, biodiversity, ecological wisdom, and sustainable ways of life.

With its rich agricultural diversity, cultural heritage, and scenic landscapes, West Bengal has immense potential to emerge as one of India's leading agro-tourism destinations. Through strong partnerships among farmers, universities, government agencies, entrepreneurs, and local communities, agro-tourism can become a transformative model for sustainable rural development, environmental education, and inclusive economic growth. Agro-tourism is not merely about visiting farmsโ€”it is about reconnecting people with nature, understanding the foundations of our food systems, celebrating our rural heritage, and inspiring a more sustainable future.
