As the nation commemorates 150 years of “Vande Mataram”, a new tradition of patriotic expression has commenced at Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya (BCKV), Mohanpur, with its daily recitation in accordance with the Government of West Bengal’s G.O.

The inaugural recitation was held in the august presence of Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, BCKV, Dr. Ashok K. Patra, and Hon’ble MLA, Haringhata, Shri Asim Sarkar. Around 200 students, teachers, officers and staff participated with enthusiasm and reverence.

From now on, “Vande Mataram” will be recited every morning at 11:00 AM, nurturing a deeper love for Bharat Mata, national pride, unity, discipline and a spirit of selfless service.

This observance reminds us that education is not merely the pursuit of knowledge and excellence, but also the cultivation of character, duty, responsibility and devotion to the nation. May the immortal spirit of “Vande Mataram” inspire every member of the BCKV family to contribute towards a strong, prosperous and self-reliant Bharat.

World Coconut Day was celebrated at Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya (BCKV) on 2nd September 2026 with a focus on the immense potential of coconut-based research, technology, value addition, processing and entrepreneurship.

The programme was jointly organised by the Coconut Development Board (CDB), State Centre, Kolkata, and ICAR-AICRP on Plantation Crops, BCKV.

The programme was graced by Dr. Kalyan Chakraborti, Hon’ble Minister-in-Charge, Food Processing Industries & Horticulture, Dept. of IT and Dept. of Science and Technology, Government of West Bengal, as the Chief Gues in the virtual mode. Dr. Pradip Dey, Director, ICAR-ATARI, Kolkata, and Shri Tapankumar Giri, Deputy Director, National Horticulture Board, Kolkata, were also present.

The Hon’ble Minister highlighted the importance of modern technologies, enhanced productivity and promotion of coconut-based industries, particularly through value addition and processing.

Dr. Ashok Kumar Patra, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, BCKV, emphasised the role of research, technology transfer and farmer-oriented extension in ensuring that scientific knowledge and modern technologies reach farmers effectively. He highlighted the potential of utilising every part of the coconut to enhance farmers’ income and generate new employment and entrepreneurship opportunities.

🥥 World Coconut Day Theme:
“Coconuts in Times of Uncertainty: Securing Food, Energy, and Livelihoods.”

The programme included technical sessions on modern coconut cultivation, pest management, productivity enhancement and processing, along with discussions on the diverse uses of coconut water, flesh, milk, oil, husk, shell, leaves and wood residues.

An exhibition of coconut-based products and materials showcased the possibilities of value addition, product development and sustainable utilisation of coconut resources.

The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Prof. A. B. Sharangi, Officer-in-Charge, ICAR-AICRP on Plantation Crops, BCKV.

Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya (BCKV) celebrated its 53rd Foundation Day on 1 September 2026 at the Convocation Hall of the University with enthusiasm and participation of distinguished guests and the entire BCKV community. The celebration honoured the University's rich legacy while reaffirming its commitment to academic excellence, agricultural innovation and service to farmers and society. Shri Dudhkumar Mondal, Hon’ble Minister-in-Charge (MIC), Department of Agriculture, Government of West Bengal, was the Chief Guest. The occasion honoured BCKV’s legacy and reaffirmed its commitment to academic excellence, agricultural innovation and service to farmers and society.

Hon’ble MIC acknowledged BCKV’s contributions to agricultural education, research and extension and its role in supporting farmers. He also recognized the challenges faced by the University and emphasized the need to strengthen its academic, research and infrastructural capabilities. He assured that the Government would make sincere efforts to address the University’s concerns and provide necessary support for its continued development and contribution to agriculture in West Bengal.

Earlier, in his address, Dr. Ashok K. Patra, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, BCKV, highlighted the University’s achievements in education, NIRF performance, development and release of improved crop varieties, breeder seed production, research and extension, and its efforts to take scientific knowledge and technologies from the laboratory to farmers’ fields. He also outlined the challenges before the University and called for collective commitment, institutional strengthening and sustained support to further enhance BCKV’s contribution to agriculture.

A significant highlight was the release of three books and the ceremonial presentation of the GI Tag certificate of Kanakchura, which was handed over to the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, BCKV, and the Director, SAMETI, by the Hon’ble Ministers. Addressing the gathering, Shri Amiya Kisko, Hon’ble Minister of State, Department of Agriculture, Government of West Bengal, assured that the GoWB would extend all possible assistance and support for improving the quality and development of the University, and resolution of several problems.

Shri Asim Sarkar, Hon’ble MLA, stressed the need for sustained advancement of agriculture to meet the demands of a growing population and highlighted the importance of science, technology and innovation for future food and nutritional security. The spiritual address by Swami Sumanasananda, Secretary, Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Baranagar, Kolkata, drawing upon the teachings of Swami Vivekananda, emphasized broadening the mind, developing self-confidence and learning to “stand on one’s own feet”, values vital for education, character building and nation-building.

Shri Bidhan Chandra Kar, Member of the Executive Council, recalled his association with BCKV and encouraged continuous improvement, while Shri Sakhi Gopal Ghosh, Member of the Executive Council, emphasized modern agriculture and strengthening the Lab-to-Land approach so that research and technology reach farmers more effectively.

Prof. Bikash Chandra Patra, Registrar, BCKV, welcomed the distinguished guests, members of the Executive Council, faculty members, officers, staff and students.The programme was well anchored by Prof. A. B. Sharengi and Dr. Deblina Maji and concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. S. Karmakar, Chairman, Organising Committee, expressing gratitude to all distinguished guests and members of the BCKV family.

The 53rd Foundation Day was more than a celebration of the past; it was a renewed commitment to the future. 🍒✨🌿 𝐇𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐓𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐰: 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞-𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 🍇🌿

The two-day District Level Seminar (MIDH 2026–27) and celebration of Horticulture Week 2026, organised at the Faculty of Horticulture, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya (BCKV), brought together scientists, policymakers, government officials, extension personnel, academicians and progressive farmers on a common platform to deliberate on the future of climate-resilient and sustainable horticulture.

The programme was graced by the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Directors of Research and Extension, Registrar, Dean of the Faculty of Horticulture, senior officials from the Departments of Horticulture and Agricultural Marketing, SDO–Kalyani, scientists and other distinguished dignitaries. The deliberations focused on the immense potential of horticulture in West Bengal, with special emphasis on the opportunities and prospects for horticultural development in Nadia district.

A major focus of the seminar was to create greater awareness about the vast potential of the horticulture sector and the need to translate scientific innovations and government interventions into practical solutions for farmers. The high-yielding and improved varieties of horticultural crops developed and released by BCKV, suitable for different agro-climatic conditions, were highlighted and promoted on the occasion, demonstrating the University’s significant contribution to enhancing productivity, profitability and climate resilience.

Expert sessions covered sustainable and smart horticulture, futuristic technologies for remunerative production, integrated pest and disease management, climate resilience and tissue culture-based production of quality planting materials. The release of the Horti-Technology booklet and distribution of bayleaf saplings among farmers further strengthened the seminar’s message of technology-led and sustainable growth.

The Farmers–Scientists Meet provided an important opportunity for direct interaction, knowledge exchange and identification of field-level challenges. Such platforms are crucial for strengthening the linkage between research, extension, government programmes and farmers.

🌿 Horticulture must now move beyond increased production towards climate resilience, technological innovation, quality, value addition, sustainability and enhanced farm income. Together, we must harness its immense potential to build a prosperous, resilient and sustainable future for West Bengal.

A Farmers’ Training-cum-Input Distribution Programme under the Frontline Demonstration (FLD) on Urdbean for 2026–27 was organised by the AICRP on MULLaRP, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya (BCKV), Mohanpur, on 19 August 2026. The programme was organised to empower farmers through the dissemination of improved production technologies and the distribution of critical production inputs for Frontline Demonstrations, aimed at promoting sustainable and productive urdbean cultivation.

The programme assumes particular significance in the context of India’s efforts to achieve self-sufficiency in pulses. Urdbean is an important source of dietary protein and plays a vital role in sustainable and diversified cropping systems. As a legume, it contributes to biological nitrogen fixation, improves nutrient cycling, adds valuable organic residues to the soil and supports the long-term sustainability of agricultural production.

The Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, emphasised the importance of integrating pulses into cropping systems under changing climatic conditions and highlighted their role in crop diversification, soil fertility improvement and sustainable agriculture. The Director of Farms and the Director of Research also highlighted the potential of urdbean to strengthen pulse production, improve farmers’ income and contribute to better soil health.

The Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Ashok K. Patra, emphasised the importance of integrated crop management in urdbean. The judicious use of organic amendments, biofertilizers and micronutrients, together with improved varieties and sound agronomic practices, can enhance nodulation, nutrient-use efficiency, crop productivity and the resilience of pulse-based production systems.

As part of the programme, quality seeds, biofertilizers and micronutrient fertilizers were distributed among the participating farmers. A leaflet on improved urdbean cultivation practices was also released to facilitate the wider dissemination of recommended technologies. The technical session included discussions on improved crop production and management practices and recently developed urdbean varieties.

Dr. Amitava Banerjee, In-charge, AICRP on MULLaRP, coordinated the programme and facilitated effective interaction between scientists and farmers. Dr. Arpita Das and Dr. Srijani Maji also played a key role in meticulously coordinating the programme and ensuring its smooth and successful conduct.

Such Frontline Demonstrations are important instruments for taking scientific innovations from research farms and laboratories to farmers’ fields. Through its research, extension and outreach programmes, BCKV remains committed to empowering farmers with improved technologies, enhancing pulse productivity, improving soil health and strengthening the foundation for sustainable agriculture.

This initiative is another meaningful step towards Atmanirbharata in pulses, contributing to higher productivity, improved farm income, climate resilience and a stronger, more sustainable agricultural future for India. 🌱🌾🇮🇳

Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya (BCKV), Mohanpur, had the privilege of hosting Dr. S. N. Jha, former Deputy Director General (Engineering), ICAR, and President of the Indian Society of Agricultural Engineers (ISAE), on 18 August 2026. His visit provided an important opportunity for meaningful interaction and discussion on the future of Agricultural Engineering and its growing role in transforming Indian agriculture.

’The programme was organised jointly by the Faculty of Agricultural Engineering, BCKV and Kolkata Chapter of the Indian Society of Agricultural Engineers (ISAE).The programme commenced with a warm welcome to the distinguished guest and participants by Prof. Subrata Karmakar, Dean, Faculty of Agricultural Engineering, BCKV. A large number of members of ISAE, faculty and staff members, and students of BCKV were present on the occasion, making it a significant academic and professional gathering.

Dr. Jha delivered a highly insightful and inspiring special lecture, followed by an interactive session with the faculty members and students of the Faculty of Agricultural Engineering. His motivational address greatly inspired the students and provided valuable guidance regarding their academic pursuits, professional development and future career opportunities.

During his address, Dr. Jha strongly emphasised the need to establish Directorates of Agricultural Engineering in all States of the country for the effective implementation and coordination of programmes and schemes related to farm mechanisation, water management and irrigation, agro-processing and post-harvest technology. Such institutional mechanisms, he observed, would help strengthen the integration of engineering innovations with agricultural development and ensure that the benefits of modern technologies reach farmers and other stakeholders more effectively.

The Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Ashok K. Patra, appreciated the efforts of the Faculty of Agricultural Engineering and the BCKV Chapter of ISAE in organising this important programme. In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor highlighted the enormous and expanding opportunities for Agricultural Engineering in the context of rapidly changing Indian agriculture. He emphasised that the discipline will play an increasingly important role in addressing the major challenges of the future, including farm labour scarcity, climate change, water scarcity, resource-use efficiency, precision agriculture, mechanisation, renewable energy, post-harvest management and value addition.

Agricultural Engineering today is not merely a supporting discipline but an essential driver of technological transformation and sustainable agricultural development. The convergence of engineering with agriculture, digital technologies, automation and environmental sustainability offers unprecedented opportunities for innovation, entrepreneurship and employment for the next generation of agricultural engineers.

BCKV remains committed to strengthening Agricultural Engineering education, research and innovation and to preparing skilled professionals who can contribute meaningfully to a modern, technology-driven, climate-resilient and sustainable agricultural future.

Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya (BCKV), Mohanpur, in association with the National Service Scheme (NSS), observed 14 August 2026 as a Day of Remembrance of the Partition of Bengal and its tragic consequences at the University Convocation Hall.
The occasion was a solemn remembrance of one of the most painful chapters in Bengal’s history—a time when families were torn apart, homes and livelihoods were lost, and countless lives were marked by displacement, uncertainty and profound sorrow. We mourn the suffering of those who endured the tragedy of Partition and pay tribute to their extraordinary courage, resilience and sacrifice.
The programme, presided over by Dr. Ashok K. Patra, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, BCKV, featured insightful addresses by Dr. Pankaj Roy, Former Principal, Jogesh Chandra Chaudhuri College, Kolkata, and Shri Asim Sarkar, Hon’ble MLA, Haringhata.
An audio-visual presentation featuring rare photographs and archival materials portrayed the human and socio-economic consequences of Partition. Students and NSS volunteers participated through patriotic songs, recitations and discussions.
As an academic community, we remember this painful chapter of history with solemnity—to honour those who suffered, preserve their memory, and draw enduring lessons for peace, harmony, unity, tolerance and national integration.
May the lessons of the past inspire us to build a more united, peaceful and compassionate future. Our solemn duty is to transform the memory of suffering into a resolve to build a stronger, more prosperous and united Bharat for generations to come.
