The Department of English, Vidyasagar Metropolitan College commemorated World Creativity and Innovation Day by taking its Semester VI students to a special exhibition on 2 April 2026, celebrating the life and works of Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay, one of Bengal’s most revered literary voices and the author of Aam Aantir Bhepu, Chander Pahaar, and Aranyak.

The exhibition, exclusively curated by his grandson Trinankur Banerjee, brought together rare archival photographs, original manuscripts, handwritten letters, early editions, and treasured family heirlooms, offering students an intimate glimpse into the writer’s life, creative process, and enduring humanism. It invited students to wander through the worlds he created—worlds where forests breathe, childhood unfolds with lyrical tenderness, and ordinary lives reveal extraordinary truths.

As part of the excursion, students also participated in a special screening of Pather Panchali, the iconic film directed by Satyajit Ray, thoughtfully organised for the visually impaired community with inclusive audio description support by Arya Moitra. Designed by Dr. Ishan Chakraborty, Assistant Professor at Jadavpur University, Kolkata, this initiative reimagined the cinematic classic through carefully crafted narration that articulated visual details, gestures, landscapes, and subtle nuances, enabling deeper engagement with the film’s emotional world.

Through immersive sound and descriptive storytelling, participants journeyed alongside Apu and Durga, experiencing rural Bengal through rhythm, voice, and imagination. The event thus became not merely an excursion, but a meaningful sensory and literary experience that celebrated creativity, innovation, and inclusivity.

The Department of English, Vidyasagar Metropolitan College commemorated World Storytelling Day on 27.03.2026 by hosting Dr. Arindom Chakraborti, Associate Professor, Department of Statistics, Visva-Bharati University, poet and dramatist, who delivered a lecture titled “Artificially Earnest: Why LLMs are Naturally Charming” at the College Auditorium, Ishwarchandra Sabhakaksha. The speaker was welcomed by Dr. Sarojit Sardar, IQAC Co-ordinator, Vidyasagar Metropolitan College.

Dr. Chakraborti’s lecture was informative, interactive, and engaging. He explored the ways in which AI, through Large Language Models (LLMs), modulates and simulates writing styles that closely resemble human expression. Using examples from poetry and prose, he invited the audience to reflect on their responses to AI-driven translation in comparison with human translation. The presentation also addressed concerns regarding the future of creative arts and fundamental research in the age of rapidly advancing AI technologies. Drawing upon his own experiences as a writer, Dr. Chakraborti suggested that AI can serve as a compass guiding creative exploration rather than a crutch that limits imagination.

The audience, comprising faculty members and a large cross-section of students, responded with enthusiasm and participated actively by raising thoughtful questions during the lively interactive session that followed the lecture.
