EMMRC, Kolkata EMRC, Kolkata produces multimedia academic material for undergraduate students. We produce multimedia academic material for undergraduate students.

These include class lectures and related exercises as well as documentaries on specific themes of academic and popular importance. It is a nearly thirty year old media research facility under the joint supervision of University Grants Commission, India and St. Xavier's College, Kolkata. In 1986, it was established as Audio Visual Research Centre (AVRC) to produce educational television programmes. It was renamed Educational Multimedia Research Centre (EMMRC) in 2004, in sync with an expanded mandate to add greater value to its products and services with the help of digital technologies. At the moment, EMMRC researches and produces international standard classroom lectures for undergraduate students and documentaries on subjects of academic and general interest.

Enrolment drive at Bhawanipur Education Society College
24 August, 2026: A four member team from EMRC Kolkata, comprising of Indrani Chakraborty, producer, Dr. Julian S Das, researcher, Kalipada Mondal, producer and Birendra Toppo, cameraman, visited Bhawanipur Education Society College, and addressed the UG and PG students of the department of English Literature on August 24, 2026.

The students were introduced to MOOCs and the SWAYAM portal, and were given a demonstration of a live MOOC. They were then helped by the EMRC team to register with the SWAYAM portal, and enroll for a MOOC, which the students happily did. Technical glitches were addressed, and one could see the joy of the students after enrolling into a MOOC.

St. Xavier’s College Multimedia department has field exposure at EMRC:

21 August, 2026: Some 20 third and fourth year students, accompanied by three staff members, of Multimedia and Animation department of St Xavier's College (Autonomous), Kolkata had a field exposure at EMRC Kolkata on August 21, 2026.

Addressing the students and the staff at the start of the day's program, Dr Rakshak Jain, director of EMRC Kolkata assured the students that the media centre would welcome creative ideas and concepts for documentary production, and that they are welcome to be part of EMRC, Kolkata in their creative endeavours.

Rev. Fr J. R. Dejus, head of the department, who had accompanied the students said that he was very happy that the Director had kindly consented to let the students experience the state of the art facilities and infrastructure at EMRC, Kolkata.

Dr Moasunep Kichu, producer-II and Dr Julian S Das, researcher organized the day's program for the students, which included a tour of the production and delivery facilities with input on the theoretical base. The students had hands-on experience at the studio in two batches, and demonstration of the PCR, ingest, server and the edit suites. The entire EMRC staff was at the disposal of the students to brief them about the technicalities of the facilities.

MOOC Awareness Program:
21 August 2026: On the 21st of August 2026, Indrani Chakrabarti, Shayam Sundur Paul, Arindam Konar and Suman Banerjee of EMRC Kolkata visited the English Department of St. Xavier's College to create a general MOOC Awareness Program and also to introduce the English courses in particular that is being offered by EMRC Kolkata in the July December Semester 2026. The EMRC team visited both post graduate and undergraduate classes of the English Department to make students aware of the Swayam platform and assist them to enroll in the courses. About a hundred students enrolled the courses as a result of this endeavour.M

Orientation on SWAYAM MOOCs and Workshop on Academic Writing:
An Orientation on SWAYAM MOOCs and a Workshop on Academic Writing were conducted at The Heritage College, Kolkata on 7 August 2026. The resource persons for the session were Dr. Moasunep Kichu, Producer II, EMRC Kolkata, and Prof. (Dr.) Kaberi Chatterjee of the college, who is also the Course Coordinator of the CEC SWAYAM MOOC “Academic Writing and Composition” for the July–December 2026 semester.
The Principal of the college, Dr. Sandip Paul, highlighted the importance of online learning and MOOCs. The Head of the Department of English, Dr. Dipannita Datta, introduced Dr. Kichu and appreciated the services and initiatives of EMRC Kolkata.
The session provided students with valuable insights into the purpose and benefits of SWAYAM MOOCs and introduced them to the fundamentals of academic writing and its importance in their academic journey.

CEC Director Prof. (Dr.) Parikshat Singh Manhas Visits EMRC Kolkata

Director of the Consortium for Educational Communication (CEC), Prof. (Dr.) Parikshat Singh Manhas, visited EMRC Kolkata on 13 August 2026. Prof. (Dr.) Manhas's EMRC visit commenced with his planting of a sapling at the Centre's green campus, following which he toured the various facilities of the Centre and interacted with the staff.
Prof. (Dr.) Manhas expressed confidence in the Centre’s potential, noting that EMRC Kolkata possesses both the technical infrastructure and human resources required to take the Centre to greater heights. He encouraged the staff to seek greater exposure to developments and practices in the wider professional world, continuously upgrade their skills and evolve in their respective fields.
Prof. (Dr.) Manhas also encouraged EMRC Kolkata to organise workshops, seminars and other knowledge-sharing programmes to facilitate greater exchange of ideas, expertise and professional experience. He assured the Centre that CEC would extend its full support and assistance in these endeavours and in EMRC Kolkata’s continued efforts towards innovation, growth and excellence in educational media.

CEC Director presents CEC Newsletter to Principal, St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous), Kolkata

The CEC Director Prof. (Dr.) Parikshat Singh Manhas presented the CEC Newsletter to the Principal of St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous), Kolkata, Rev. Dr. Dominic Savio, SJ and briefed other board members on the CEC’s vision and aspirations for strengthening and taking the Media Centres forward in the evolving landscape of educational media and digital learning on 13 August 2026.
