Congratulations Lakshmi S Gopal
We proudly congratulate Lakshmi S Gopal on the recognition of her research through a recently published journal article, co-authored by Dr. Rekha Prabha, Dr. Hemalatha T., Dr. Maneesha V. Ramesh, and Dr. Bruce D Malamud, also featured in PreventionWeb, the knowledge platform of United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and the European Geosciences Union (EGU) press release.
The study synthesizes 250 peer-reviewed publications (2010โ2023) and rigorously evaluates how social media data have been used across disaster management phases, including situational awareness, needs identification, and community response. Importantly, the paper moves beyond descriptive synthesis. It critically examines methodological weaknesses such as data bias and representativeness, and sets out concrete directions for more robust, transparent, and responsible future research. An extensive open database accompanies the work.
This research originated from collaborative efforts under the NERC: Natural Environment Research Council NERC/FCDO LANDSLIP project, where the Amrita Center for Wireless Networks & Applications contributed as a Co-Investigator partner alongside international collaborators.
This achievement reflects Lakshmiโs analytical rigor, persistence, and intellectual independence as a PhD researcher, and exemplifies the globally relevant, methodologically grounded scholarship that AmritaWNA is committed to advancing.
We congratulate Lakshmi and her co-authors on this well-deserved recognition

Amrita Center for Wireless Networks and Applications (Amrita WNA) is a cutting-edge, interdisciplinary Center for teaching and research. It has a long standing tradition of interdisciplinary research amongst a myriad of engineering & science streams. We focus extensively on research in the field of wireless communications, sensor networks, embedded systems, signal processing and its applications to meet societal needs. Broadly the application areas include Disaster management, Intelligent infrastructures in terms of Water and Energy, education and healthcare.
The center offers 3 MTech Courses handled by experienced faculty and researchers from Academia and Industry in India and around the world. In a short span, some students have even enrolled into Dual Degree graduate programs, secured internships & learning exchange programs with top international universities through our collaborative efforts. The center has been awarded 18 patents over the years for its various research works in Landslides - 3, National Knowledge Network - 5, Oceannet - 2, Healthcare - 3 and Energy - 4.
The centre is credited for developing and deploying the worldโs first WSN system for continuous surveillance and early-warning of landslides at Munnar, Kerala. Subsequent to this, the center has implemented a similar system at Sikkim, at the behest of the Govt. of India and now looking at other areas in the Himalayan belt for additional WSN system deployments. The center has a landslide laboratory and has been recognized as the โWorld Center of Excellence for Landslide Disaster Risk Reductionโ.
An NKN global classroom presents a futuristic media-rich classroom environment that presents the distant students-&-teacher with a near-real immersive experience that mimics the conventional in-person teaching-learning experience. An amalgamation of several adaptive computer vision algorithms produces this effect. Dynamic tripartite gaze correction algorithms triggered by natural gesture interfaces make the setup have no learning curve. "Walk in and use" modality enhances the efficacy of the system. This work has produced two PhD's, 4 patents and also garnered several accolades from several government and non-government organizations.
A prototype architecture of a wireless smart grid has been developed for India. Key features of this design include optimization of electrical distribution, and creation of smart solutions for major problems such as wastage of electrical energy, power theft, electrical line fault detection method, and to provide smart solutions for automatic billing and controlling systems. Smart Energy Meters and other intelligent devices are being developed to monitor and control electric energy usage in real-time. The same concept is being extended towards areas of Smart Water systems , Smart Buildings & Homes, Rural Electrification schemes.
Amrita OceanNet offers affordable wireless internet connectivity to fishermen at sea. The network provides connectivity up to 60 km from the shore. We developed and deployed this low cost communication infrastructure using long range wi-fi backhaul. Fishermen can connect to this network using their smartphone. This solution has been field tested 7 times so far with up to 4 trawlers and it has also been permanently deployed on 11 trawlers. Five base stations have been deployed along the coast of Kerala providing coverage from Kochi to Thiruvananthapuram. This network will help to alert about impending storms, collision with another vessel, etc. It will enable real-time tracking, search and rescue, IoT networks for oceanography and weather monitoring and many other such applications.
