Government College, Kottayam was started in 1972 by the Government of Kerala and is now in its 40th year of establishment. C. K.

It is affiliated to the Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam and is accredited by the NAAC at B level. 1972 October 27
College formally inaugurated by Sri. Achutha Menon, Chief Minister of Kerala.

1974 March
Pre-degree classes shifted to the semi permanent buildings constructed in the campus

March 1976
Foundation laid for 'A' Block

1976 June
B.Sc. Geology started

1977 June
B.Com and Pre-degree

Group IV started

1978 June
'A' Block completed. Degree classes and office shifted to the building.

1979 August
Shift system introduced for Pre-degree courses

1980 February
'A' Block formally inaguratedby Shri. Baby John, Minister for Education
1981 September
B.Sc. Physics and Botany started

1981 November
M.A. Economics started

1983 June
Foundation for 'B' Block laid by Sri.T.M. Jacob, Minister for Education

1984
M.Sc. Geology started

1985 June
Drinking water supply scheme launched.

1987 September
'B' Blockof the college building inaugurated by Sri. Chandrasekharan, Minister for Education.

1988 September
College Development Council (CDC) constituted by the Government of Kerala

1992 February
College Auditorium constructed by the C.D.C. inaugurated by Sri. E.T. Mohammed Basheer, Minister for Education

1997 March
Silver Jubilee Celebrated Foundation stone for 'C' Block laid. College Canteen started. Computer Centre inaugurated

1998 July
M.Sc. Physics and B.Sc. Industrial Chemistry (U.G.C. sponsored) started

1999 December
B.Sc. Zoology started

2000 March
Pre-degree delinking completed.

2003 July
U.G.C. Network Resource Centre started.

2004 March
Aquarium House for the Dept. of Zoology Construction started. Women's Hostel Con struction started.

2004 May
Borewell constructed. B.Sc. Industrial Chemistry (Vocational Model II) started.

2006 December
Language Lab Internet facility provided.

2007 December
'C' Block Inaguration. Our Vision - Light and Prosperity


The College aims at imparting education that would liberate man from ignorance to the light of knowledge, leading to the well being of all. It represents the desire to give light of knowledge and wisdom to those in poverty and illiteracy.
