Prof. Debashis (Deb Ashis) Chatterjee, Director, IIM Kozhikode, in his latest column published in today’s edition of Mint , reflects on the evolving relationship between power, leadership and humility in institutions.

Titled “Making ego an ally, not an adversary”, the article examines how leadership can shift from service to self-importance when applause grows louder than accountability, and why enduring institutions are built on perspective, dissent and self-awareness.

Congratulations to our Doctoral Scholar Ms Aastha Arora and faculty member Prof. Krishnan TN (Organisational Behaviour and Human Resources) for their co-authored Research Publication titled "Unpacking essential competencies: A typology for global virtual leadership", appearing - "Human Resource Management Review", an 'A' category Journal in the ABDC List.

The widespread adoption of distributed work has placed global virtual teams (GVTs) at the center of organizational functioning. Although research on global leadership and virtual leadership has expanded, insights into the competencies at their intersection remain fragmented. This review conceptualizes Global Virtual Leadership (GVL) as a socio-technical phenomenon shaped by the interacting challenges of distance, diversity, and dynamism. The Researchers draw on socio-technical systems theory to frame GVTs as work systems in which leadership competencies act as levers that align social and technical sub-systems.

A journey of over 3000 kilometres. One nation. Countless connections!

As part of Phase VI of the Government of India’s Yuva Sangam initiative under the Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat campaign, a 39-member delegation from Kerala and Lakshadweep has embarked on an immersive educational and cultural exchange programme to Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh.

Coordinated by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, and hosted jointly by the Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode and the Indian Institute of Management Jammu, the programme aims to strengthen people-to-people connect and deepen understanding of India’s rich diversity among youth.

The delegation was flagged off by Prof. Debashis (Deb Ashis) Chatterjee , Director of Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode, ahead of a nearly 60-hour train journey from Palakkad to Jammu Tawi — one of the longest rail journeys undertaken in the history of the Yuva Sangam programme.

The delegation comprises students representing all 14 districts of Kerala along with participation from Lakshadweep, bringing together undergraduate, postgraduate and off-campus youth participants. Accompanied by faculty and staff members from IIM Kozhikode, the students will engage with institutions, policymakers, academicians and local communities across Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh over the next several days.

As part of the immersive itinerary, the participants will visit important cultural, historical and developmental landmarks including the Chenab Rail Bridge, Salal Hydro Project, Mubarak Mandi Palace, Bahu Fort, Mansar Lake, Dogra Art Museum and several other locations reflecting the spirit of Yuva Sangam’s 5Ps — Paryatan, Parampara, Pragati, Paraspar Sampark and Prodyogiki.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Chatterjee noted that Yuva Sangam offers young people a unique opportunity to celebrate India’s diversity, exchange ideas and build lasting bonds across regions and cultures.

The exchange programme will also see a 50-member delegation from Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh visit Kerala later this month for a week-long immersion hosted by IIM Kozhikode.

IIM Kozhikode proudly welcomed the 13th batch of the Executive Post Graduate Programme (EPGP) at the Kochi Campus — one of the largest and most diverse cohorts in the programme’s journey so far.

The EPGP 13 cohort comprises 204 participants with an average age of 31 years and nearly 8 years of work experience, bringing together emerging leaders and seasoned professionals from across industries and functions.

We were honoured to have Shri. Neelesh Hundekari, Senior Partner at Kearney, as the Chief Guest for the inauguration ceremony presided over by Prof. Debashis (Deb Ashis) Chatterjee, Director, IIM Kozhikode.

Addressing the participants, Shri. Hundekari urged professionals to continuously question what they know and remain committed to lifelong learning. Emphasising India’s growing global significance over the next 25 years, he noted that technology itself may not replace jobs, but people who know how to leverage it effectively will. He highlighted that the future will increasingly value uniquely human capabilities such as complex judgement, empathy, creativity, and the ability to inspire.

Prof. Chatterjee spoke about the importance of integrating the “head, hand and heart” to bridge the knowledge-action gap and encouraged participants to constantly push their frontiers of action and leadership.

The cohort reflects increasing diversity, with 29% women participants and representation from a wide spectrum of sectors including IT/ITES (38%), Manufacturing (14%), Sales & Marketing (11%), BFSI, government, entrepreneurship, and more. The rich mix of organizations and professional experiences will further strengthen peer learning — a defining aspect of the EPGP journey.

Earlier, Prof. Venkataraman S, Associate Dean – Kochi Campus, and Prof. R Shruti, Chairperson, EPGP – Kochi Campus, welcomed the new cohort and congratulated them on earning admission through a rigorous selection process.

The continued growth of the Kochi Campus reflects the collective efforts and commitment of the institution’s leadership, faculty, staff, alumni, and support teams who continue to shape a vibrant learning ecosystem for working professionals.

Research Spotlight | IIM Kozhikode

Congratulations to Prof. Sthanu Nair (Economics) on his co-authored publication in the Journal of Behavioral and Experimental Economics (ABDC ‘A’).

The study, “Impact of Text Messages on Farmers' Adoption of Agriculture App and Its Effect on Farm Level Outcomes,” explores how simple behavioural nudges can drive meaningful change in agriculture.

Using a randomised controlled trial (RCT) the research examines the impact of periodic SMS reminders encouraging the use of a mobile-based agriculture applications (MPA).

Key insights:

-Text message nudges significantly boosted adoption, reflected in higher app installations and login activity

-However, they did not increase the total time spent on the app

-Using an instrumental variable approach, the study finds that greater engagement with the app led to better farm outcomes:

These findings highlight how low-cost behavioural interventions, such as SMS reminders, can accelerate the adoption and effective use of digital tools—ultimately improving market access and input efficiency for farmers.

The research offers valuable insights for policymakers and practitioners working at the intersection of behavioural science, technology, and agricultural development.
