KASHMIR FRUIT INDUSTRY AND ElNino Effect
The El Niño phenomenon can have a major impact on the apple industry of Kashmir Valley because apple cultivation depends heavily on cold winters, adequate snowfall, regular rainfall, and stable temperatures.
How El Niño affects Kashmir apples
1. Reduced Snowfall and Warmer Winters
Apple trees need sufficient winter chilling hours to enter dormancy and produce healthy blossoms in spring. During El Niño years, winters can become warmer with less snowfall, reducing these chilling hours. This may lead to:
Poor flowering
Uneven fruit development
Lower yields
2. Erratic Rainfall
El Niño often disturbs normal precipitation patterns across South Asia. In Kashmir this can cause:
Dry spells during critical growth stages
Sudden heavy rains
Water stress in orchards

3. Hailstorms and Extreme Weather
Recent studies show increasing hailstorm activity during flowering and fruit-setting periods. Even a short hailstorm can:
Damage blossoms and young fruit
Reduce market quality
Cause season-long financial losses for growers
4. Pollination Problems
Temperature fluctuations affect bee activity during flowering. Poor pollination means:
Fewer fruits set on trees
Smaller harvests
Reduced fruit quality
Increase in Diseases and Pests
Warmer and more humid conditions can favor:
Apple scab disease
Leaf miner infestations
Other fungal and insect attacks
This increases spraying costs and crop losses.
Economic Impact
The apple industry contributes roughly ₹10,000–15,000 crore annually and supports hundreds of thousands of families across Kashmir. Climate-related losses from reduced production, poor fruit quality, hail damage, and transport disruptions can severely affect growers' incomes.
Simple Flow Diagram

EiNiño → Warmer winters & irregular rainfall → Poor flowering & pollination → Lower apple production and quality → Financial losses for growers
Scientists have recently warned that a developing El Niño could further increase weather uncertainty in Kashmir, making orchard management more challenging in the coming seasons.
