Friday Assembly Conducted by Department of Economics of Isabella
Thoburn College Lucknow
On 25th August 2023, Friday Assembly was held in Isabella Thoburn College. It was attended by around 200 students from all the streams and 40 faculty members across the departments.
This assembly was organized by Department of Economics in collaboration with ITCEF on the topic - "Environment and Climate Changes".
Our honourable Principal ma’am welcomed our special guest ; Professor Ritu Gulati, with a pot of plant. Prof Ritu Gulati is Head of Department of School of Architecture in AKTU who has been invited by the department of Economics.
In this assembly she emphasised on the importance of environment and for that we should bring changes in our day-to – day practices in order to bring a balance between nature and man made world. As we can see the consequences in form of drastic changes in climate in recent years which can be threatening to our agriculture and food security system.
Then she discussed in detail about Global Warming and the way it can be more life threatening to our Bio- diversities and Ecosystem. It can cause - increase in the risk of global crises such as water crises, loss of 335+ species, shortage of food etc.
In the end she concluded her speech by telling about the precautions one can take to save our Environment by using three R’s namely - Reduce , Re-pair and Re-Use our resources. People should volunteer to engage in Environment related activities like planting more trees and use less energy consuming products.
In the end our respected Principal Dr Vinita Prakash gave her closing remarks to the Friday assembly and concluded the event .

On 24th April , 2023, another interactive session, on the occasion of 'WORLD BOOK DAY', was organized by ITCEF under the guidance and support of the Head of the Post Graduate Department of Economics, Dr. Anupama Srivastava. The host of the session was Vidushi Shukla, and the session began with a word of prayer as is a tradition of our college by Shriya Bhatia.

The session was started by the welcoming of the students and teachers by Dr. Anupama Srivastava, Head of the Post Graduate Department of Economics. Then ma'am told about the importance of reading books that how it helps in enhancing our self confidence and self esteem. It also develops our personality and enhances our knowledge.

Then ma'am shared her experience about the book 'Shatranj K Khiladi' by Munshi Premchand. She told that although she doesn't like history and believes that history is all about mugging of facts but after reading this book she realised that history plays a vital role in what we are today. She told about the character of Wajid Ali shah and his two friends who used to play Shatranj and were not interested in what was going around in their surroundings and were only interested about their shatranj and happiness. Then ma'am told that this story is relevant in today's scenario also. We should always respect the position that we are in.
Then she shared her experience about 'APJ Abdul Kalam Autobiography '. She started with an quote - “You have to dream before your dreams can come true.” where she emphasized on the importance of dreaming so that we can achieve our aim She further explained it saying, “To succeed in your mission, you must have single-minded devotion to your goal" with the help of a shlokh from Bhagvat Gita "कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन्। मा कर्मफलहेतुर्भूर्मा ते संगोस्त्वकर्मणि। " Which means You have right to action only, never to fruits. Let not the fruits of action be thy motive, nor let thy attachment be to inaction.
Then she shared her experience about the book - ' I do what I do ' by Raghuram Rajan, an Indian economist and 23rd RBI Governor of India. Ma'am told that Sir Rajan explains economic concepts in a readily accessible way. Equally, he addresses key issues that are not in any banking manual but essential to growth: the need for tolerance and respect to assure India’s economic progress.

The host then asked Dr. Amita Marwah, Faculty at the Department of Economics, to share her experience about the book that she read recently. Ma'am told that she read recently a book named - A More Beautiful Question: The Power of Inquiry to Spark Breakthrough Ideas by Warren Berger. She begins with the question asked by small child in the book that why sky is blue? She tells that the writer is not happy with the society as they discourage the habit of questioning. She also explains the story with the character of two teacher in which one teacher used to motivate their children and helps them in dealing their problems and try to solve their problems while the other teacher only tried to complete her syllabus and discouraged her children when they ask questions. Ma'am told that the power of questioning is very important whether as a teacher, parent or as children.
Then she shared her experience about the second book- ' The Art of Logic: How to Make Sense in a World that Doesn't ' by Eugenia Cheng. Ma'am told that Eugenia Chang has created an excellent presentation of what logic is, what it is not, and how to use logic in real life situations. It illuminated her thinking about how to engage in discussions of all kinds with people having opposing views.
Then she told about the next book 'The Power of Vulnerability: Teachings on Authenticity, Connection, & Courage' by Brené Brown. Ma'am told that the collection of teachings on authenticity, connection, and courage helps dispel the myth that vulnerability is weakness and reveals that it is, in truth, our most accurate measure of courage.

The host then asked Ms. Khansa, Faculty at the Department of Economics to share her experience about the book that she read. Mam told that she read - 'The Pursuit of Happiness by Chris Gardner. She tells the story of a struggling salesman who never gave up trying to find true happiness for himself and his son. He faced many challenges in his life but overcame adversity to succeed above all odds.

Then Ms. Anjali Yadav, Faculty at the Department of Economics told that she watched a movie on Stephen Hawking. She found it really interesting therefore she read the book which was written by her wife Jane Hawking from which her takeaway was if life throws lemon, you make lemonade. She discussed that however Stephen Hawking had went through a lot of complications and suffered diseases, inspite of all these , today he is an inspiration for all of us. Mam told that we should be curious, and however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do, and succeed at.
Then ma'am shared her experience about the book - 'The Power of your subconscious mind' by Joseph Murphy. Ma'am told that your subconscious mind is a powerful force to be reckoned with. It makes up around 95% of your brain power and handles everything your body needs to function properly, from eating and breathing to digesting and making memories. So we should try to control our subconscious mind by doing meditation, have a positive thinking and get a proper sleep.

The host then asked Ms. Shikha Singh, Faculty at the Department of Economics to share her experience about the book that she read recently. She told that she was inspired by a book named - 'The Alchemist' by Paulo Coelho. Ma'am told that the book gave her a new perspective on life's purpose. She told that all individuals should live in the singular pursuit of their individual dreams.

The host then asked the participants to share the books that they read recently.
One of the participant, Anukriti Tandon who recently read 'The Book Thief' by Markus Zusak. She told that the Book is a historical fiction novel by the Australian author Markus Zusak, set in N**i Germany during World War II. She discussed the character of a Jewish girl who was suffering a lot but still she had kindness in her heart for others.
Currently she is reading a book on Vedic Mathematics where she understood how Shakuntla Devi used to solve the mathematical calculations.

The second participant Gulistan Rahman told that we all should read religious book whether Bhagvat Gita, Qur'an or Bible. She told that all religious books, will teach us the moral values that will guide our life. They all teach to discover the purpose of life and live a fulfilled life.

The third participant was Surobhi Chatterjee who read 'The Strength in Our Scars' by Bianca Sparacino. The book tackles the gut-wrenching but relatable experiences of moving on, self-love, and ultimately learning to heal. In this book you will find peace, you will find a rock, you will find understanding, and you will find hope.

The session concluded with a formal vote of thanks by Dr. Amita Marwah, Faculty at the Department of Economics and the Faculty Editor of ArthnITi.

We are glad to share with you all the Edition from December to February of our E-newsletter 'ArthnITi'.

We would like to thank our Isabella Thoburn College family specially our President Dr. E. S. Charles, our Principal Dr. Vinita Prakash, Head, Post Graduate Department of Economics, Dr. Anupama Srivastava and faculty teachers Dr. Amita Marwha, Ms. Anjali Yadav, Ms. Khansa Riaz and Ms. Shikha Singh for guiding us throughout the release of this edition and we also thank all the members of Team ArthnITi for their constant support.

Lastly and most importantly we thank our Readers who supported us in these 3 years journey. You all kept us motivated to do better and bring out the best possible.

On the 21st of November , 2022 , a very beneficial and enthusiastic workshop was organized by the Reserve Bank of India hosted at Isabella Thoburn College , Lucknow under the guidance of Dr. Anupama Srivastava , Head, Department of Economics . The aim of this workshop was to create awareness among the female students regarding improving the gender diversity in various banks with respect to Grade-B direct recruitment positions available for all streams and to answer several other questions associated with this domain. For this event we had Dr. Balu Kenchappa, Regional Director, Reserve Bank of India, Uttar Pradesh with us .


Dr.Kenchappa had joined the RBI in the year 1993 as a Grade B DR. With a career spanning almost 30 years he has served in different capacities in several areas of the Bank like Banking Supervision, handling of Government and Bank accounts, and was the Banking Ombudsman for the State of Tamil Nadu and UT of Pondicherry.

Apart from this Dr. Balu has also served as the faculty at Reserve Bank Staff College, Chennai where the fresh talent recruited by the Bank is provided induction training. He has a wide experience in addressing customer grievance and supervision of banks.

The event was started by Shriya Bhatia , the host of the event inviting Sharon Das for the word of prayer for the successful completion of the campaign. After this the event’s coordinator, Head of the Department of Economics and a member of the career counselling and placement cell, Dr. Anupma Srivastava, gave a warm welcome to our guests Dr. Kenchappa, Ms. Akansha Gupta, Manager, Human Resource Management Department, Reserve Bank of India and Aprajita ma'am . She stressed the importance of such awareness campaigns with respect to job opportunities . Later, the college principal, Dr. V. Prakash expressed the college's gratitude towards the guests for sparing their valuable time and invited them for the formal traditional lightning of the lamp ceremony. Later, she presented the guests with the college mementos and plant saplings .

Dr. Kenchappa addressed the students, educating them about the history and the work culture of RBI claiming it to be one of the most progressive, sacred and non corrupt institutions in present India. He talked about RBI 's recently undertaken special initiative of awareness campaigns in Women Centric institutions regarding its various employment opportunities and steps to reduce gender and diversity disparities .

Later during the session, Ms. Akansha Gupta ma'am who is the manager of HR management department , RBI highlighted the low women workforce in our country and expressed her wish for reformation. Giving details about the institution, she told them that currently the central office of RBI is in Mumbai and that RBI performs multi-faceted roles such as regulating the commercial banks, foreign exchange management, overseeing payments and settlement systems, keeping vigilance regarding smooth money transfer etc. She urged the students to consider RBI as a profitable career option as it is an enriching experience and an overall a supreme commitment to the country. They provide people with jobs of authority wherein the officers interact with international organization , represent the nation at international forums like G20 and connect with some of the top minds of the country while framing spearhead reforms that touch millions of lives. Moreover, she emphasized the fact that lack of proper guidance and awareness often acts as a hinderance towards being part of such stable and skill enhancing career opportunities.

She further highlighted that RBI offers its officers with supportive HR climate, attractive compensation, a sense of belongingness, work - life balance with flexible working hours and intellectual fulfillment. In addition to the monthly emoluments, the bank offers various benefits like reimbursement of different expenses. It provides an accommodative work culture and employee friendly policies including maternity leaves and hospital bill expense rules, study leaves, golden jubilee scholarship scheme after 5 years of employment to pursue higher education in foreign universities like the London school of economics, Cambridge University, Oxford University in addition with a Regional Complaints Committee which works on the principles of Vishakha guidelines of the Supreme Court to implement prevention of Sexual Harassment at Work Act. She further explained the various summer internship programmes in which the post graduate students can apply. Students in integrated 5 year and 3 year courses in management, law, commerce, finance etc. can also apply for the same.

Later on, Aprajita ma'am who herself was recruited recently in the organization shared her working experience and explained the students about the examination and selection pattern which has been divided into 3 parts : phase 1 , phase 2 and the interview round. She explained the various posts available for graduate and post graduate students in RBI like legal officer in Grade B, Manager (technical / civil), Rajbasha (AM ) etc. Some of these posts require certain years of working experience too.
She emphasized the fact that RBI provides people with a diversity of job opportunities and allows people to interact with a diverse section of people with different levels of education and personal experiences and all of this helps develop a greater level of understanding and great decision making practice among the various officers of RBI .

At present RBI is trying to make its institution more women centric and provide them with equal opportunities as men in any banking and commerce field.

After this, a very interactive and helpful question answer session took place where the students had put forward their questions to the guests and they gratefully answered them. After which our principal ma'am, Dr.V.Prakash presented the formal vote of thanks to the guests and expressed her appreciation towards the successful management of this informative session.

2. They will pay online application fee.
3. After payment , they will fill main application form in which they fill their academic details and upload various documents like photo, signature , graduation marksheet, Christians baptism certificate, church member certificate, etc.
Then application form will be considered complete.

A special assembly was organized by the Post Graduate Department of Economics, Isabella Thoburn College on 6th May,2022 , on the theme “ Managerial skills & Leadership – How to take management as Career” . The speaker for the event was Mr. Anubhav Singh, City Head and Chief Mentor IMS Lucknow. The event was organised under the guidance of Dr. Anupma Srivastava, Head of Department of Economics, Dr.Amita Marwah, Mrs. Priti Sharma, Ms. Anjali Yadav and Mr. Aayush Goel. The event started with a general welcome by Principal, Dr. Vinita Prakash. Naina and Shriya Bhatia were the co-host for the event.
Mr. Anubhav Singh started with a presentation and shared insight into the lives of the influential self-made women’s like Indira Nooyi, Falguni Nayar , Rashmi Bansal .He spoke about the importance of various management spheres associated on a daily basis like the HR, Finance, Marketing and Management Operations. He also stressed on the stages that one needs to pass in order to land a seat in a MBA Course in any good college. He explained the structure of a CAT exam and what exactly is a percentile. He then, showed in his slides the various MBA colleges one can shortlist. He presented some figures showing the rise in demand of women in management field.
After the presentation, the session was concluded with a formal vote of thanks by the Principal, Dr. Vinita Prakash.

On 8th March, 2022, an event was organized on the occasion of ‘ International Women’s Day ’ by the Editorial Board of the Post Graduate Department of Economics in collaboration with Centre for Women’s Studies, on a virtual platform, Google Meet. The event was presided by the college President Dr ( Mrs.) E.S. CharlesandPrincipal, Dr Vinita Prakash.It was conducted under the guidance of Dr.Anupama Srivastava, (Head, Department of Economics and Coordinator of Centre for Women’s Studies) along with faculty members Dr.AmitaMarwah, Mrs. PritiSharma, Mr.AyushGoel and Ms. Anjali Yadav.

The guest speakers for the event were Dr.Sangeeta Desai, currently visiting faculty, Sophia college, Mumbai ,Dr.Ruby Bakshi, Alumni, award winning Educationalist, Dr.Varuni Pathak, Alumni, guest speaker Assistant Professor, in the department of Geography,Central University, Allahabad,Mrs. Vipra Srivastava, Alumni, presently heading the Tataclass edge operations of U.P. and theonly lady in sales and operations, Dr. Vijay Ratna, Alumni, head of the Sarsual block, in Kanpur Nagar, U.P. , Assistant Professor in Smt. RamkaliIqbal Bahadur Group of Colleges, in Kanpur Nagar, U.P. and Mrs.Pranika Bhatt, Alumni, founder and director of Shistsmriti, a trained Kathak dancer from Lucknow Gharana and a member of the Council of International Dancers ( UNESCO ) .

The event started with a general welcome by the Principal, Dr. Vinita Prakash. She encouraged the students to believe in themselves and emerge as winners depite odds.The Guest of Honour of the event was Dr. ( Mrs.) E.S. Charles.Members of Ed Board, Anushkaand Ritika were the host for day and Jennifer lead us all into the word of prayer.

The event started with the guest of honour, Dr. E. S. Charles who shared her thoughts and experiences. She encouragedthe students to be courageous and stand out and have a wonderful life. Then the next speaker Dr.Anupma Srivastava shared the objectives and mission of Centre for Women’s Studies through her presentation. Thekeynote speaker,Dr.SangeetaDesai focussedon the struggles a woman faced in her daily life. Be iteducation, career, life decisions, a womanwas dependent on men and to overcome this, she had started initiatives to make them aware, strong and independent. The next speaker was Dr.RubyBakshiand she stated some of the events of her life. How she overcame her shyness. andovercame male – dominated decisions,studied abroadand overcame the challenges to make a name for herself. She was then followed by the next speaker Dr.Varuni Pathak whotold us about pervasive inequality and discrimination in all aspects of society. She undauntingly faced all the challenges and the small – mindedness and emerged an achiever. The next speaker was Mrs. Vipra Srivastava. She threw light on the need for a woman to support another woman to achieve formidable changes in society. She gave theexample ofSavitri Bai Phule who was an Indian social reformer, educationlist and the role she played in improving women’s rights in India. She was then followed by the next speaker Dr.VijayRatna. She talked aboutthe conservative society in whichwomen were constantly being reminded of how they should sit, work and live and how they should match the expectations of the society and irrespective of all this she broke all the stereotypes and worked hard to emerge victorious. Mrs. Pranika Bhatt was the last speaker who threw light on the difficulties she faced in her life. She dwelledon how she worked hard during pandemic and started her online classes, the difficulties she faced to achieve her dream of dancing without any financial support. She enlightened the students abouthow dancing and yoga helped her to attain inner peace. She emphasized the need to be positive in all situations. Last but not the least, students recited poemsand shared their entrepreneurial experiences.

In the end of the program, Dr.Anupama Srivastava conveyed a formal vote of thanks to everyone for being a part and making it a successful one.

A general briefing about the upcoming certificate course on Econometrics, Maths and Statistics was organized by the Post Graduate Department of Economics, Isabella Thoburn College on 03rd March 2022.

The keynote speakers of the event were Prof. Yashvir Tyagi and Dr. Alpana Srivastava . The event was organized under the guidance of Dr. Anupma Srivastava, Head of Department of Economics, Dr. Amita Marwah, Mrs. Priti Sharma, Mr. Aayush Goel and Ms.Anjali Yadav. The event started with a general welcome by the Principal, Dr. Vinita Prakash. Shriya Bhatia and Aparna N. Srivastava were the host for the day and Vasundhara Singh lead us all to the word of prayer.

The event started with the inaugural address by Prof. Yashvir Tyagi, where he emphasised on the importance of these subjects from the research point of view and how these subjects are ever evolving. Dr. Alpana Srivastava also asserted along the same line stating that statistics and econometrics are very important for content analysis. She also stressed on the point that jobs these days require intense knowledge of these core subjects.

Dr. Anumpa Srivastava asserted on the importance and rationale of the certificate course. There were 3 key presenters - Dr.Amita Marwaha, Mr. Aayush Goel and Ms. Anjali Yadav .

Dr.Amita Marwaha, she introduced the Maths module showcasing the importance of mathematical analysis in everyday decision making and not just for economic analysis. Mr. Aayush Goel introduced the Econometrics module were he stated the growing importance of econometrics in the field of research and how it helps in analysing economic policies and decisions. Ms. Anjali Yadav, she introduced the Statistics module, she stated that statistics act as a link between maths and econometrics. The session ended with a vote of thanks by Dr. Anupma Srivastava, Head of Department of Economics.

On 5th February, 2022, a session of Arthcharcha cm presentation was organised on the " Budget 2022 - 23 " by the Editorial Board of the Post Graduate Department of Economics in collaboration with ITCEF, on a virtual platform, Google Meet , under the guidance of Dr. Anupama Srivastava ,Head of Department of Economics along with Dr. Amita Marwah and faculty members Mrs. Priti Sharma and Mr. Aayush Goel and Ms. Anjali Yadav.

The guest speaker for the session was Dr. Alpana Srivastava, Professor and Area head Statistics, Economics, IT, and OM Bcom program director at Amity University. She was welcomed by the Principal of the College , Dr. (Mrs.) Vinita Prakash. Dr. Amita Marwha gave a brief introduction of the guest to everyone.

The session began with the word of prayer by Vasundhara, member of Edboard, followed by the presentations by the students.

Shailja from B.A. 3rd year gave a brief introduction to budget 2022- 23 followed by Divya and Tanushree from B. A. 3rd year who explained important terms and highlights of the budget. Shivangi Mishra and Anuradha from B.A. 1st year gave presentations on Infrastructure and all the new sectors on which the government focused including mental health, E - Passports , net zero emissions, animation and gaming. Shriya Bhatia from B.A. 3rd year gave a brief overview on budget on Education sector. At last, Kriti and Gulistan from M.A. 1st year explained the tax sector and youth perspective on budget 2022-23 .

The program was then followed by S.W.O.C. Analysis by Shriya Bhatia which was then followed by an interactive question answer round by the students and the teachers.

At the end of the program, the Head, Department of Economics, Dr. Anupama Srivastava conveyed a formal vote of thanks to everyone and thanked for being a part of the event and making it a successful one.

We would like to thank you to our Isabella Thoburn College family specially our President Dr. E. S. A guest lecture was organized by the Post Graduate Department of Economics, Isabella Thoburn College on 27th November 2021, on a key topic “Mainstreaming gender Into Economics” under the flagship of Mission Shakti 3.0, Initiative by Government of U.P. The speaker of the event was Prof. Vibhuti Patel. The event was organized under the guidance of Dr. Anupma Srivastava, Head of Department of Economics, Dr. Amita Marwah, Mrs. Priti Sharma and Mr. Aayush Goel. The event started with a general welcome by the Principal, Dr. Vinita Prakash were she also gave us an insight about the beginning of Isabella Thoburn College. Naina Kumar hosted the event and Jennifer Jacob lead us all to the word of prayer.

The 4 students who presented beautiful presentations on various themes ranging from women’s role in corporate sector to women’s political and legal rights to women’s role in bringing about environmental sustainability. After the presentations the platform was transferred to the guest speaker. Prof. Vibhuti initially spoke about gender economics and it's importance as a discipline. She also highlighted the need to recognise the contribution made by women in all the aspects of life. She also spoke about some challenges such as majority of women indulging in unpaid work, unequal pay even when they contribute equally as their male counterparts, gender biasness in economic theories and so on.

She also asserted on the need to bring about gender mainstreaming in all the sections and sectors of the economy, to analyse policies from a gendered perspective and most of all to have a collective say in matters concerning to gender discrimination and inequality.

With this the floor was open for questions from the faculty and students. The session ended with a vote of thanks by Dr. Anupma Srivastava, Head of Department of Economics.
