Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared. It is with this feeling that Bearys Institute of Technology (BIT) launched “Bearys Shiksha – Suraksha Foundation (BSSF)” on September 3rd, 2014 at its campus in Mangalore. Mr. Andrew J Lock, President of Herman Miller International, Mr. Kartik Shethia, Sales Director SAARC regions , Herman Miller, and Chairman of Bearys Group Mr. Syed Mohamed Beary inaugurated the scheme which is the first of its kind in an Engineering college in this region.
Campus Director, Dr. M. Sainath, during his briefing about the scheme said –“The vision of this scheme is to facilitate good Education for the children of the low-income employees of Bearys Institute of Technology. Parents of these children would not need to worry about where the money for the fees of the children is going to come from because the BSSF foundation would provide support for the same.” Elaborating further on how the scheme works, he said that the funds would come from voluntary contributions every month from all the employees of the college. At the end of the year, the management would then give a matching contribution to the total amount collected through the year. These funds would then be distributed to the employees who apply for support by virtue of a point’s scheme awarded to each application under various heads.”
Launching the scheme at BIT, the Principal Dr. K. Palakshappa handed over an envelope to the Chairman Mr. Syed Mohamed Beary, containing the first contribution to the fund by himself, the Campus Director and the Heads of the Departments. The Chairman then immediately deposited Rs.1, 00,000 to the fund as a matching grant from the management and wished the scheme the very best. Student volunteers and faculty coordinators of the scheme received the contribution from him.
Mr. Syed Mohamed Beary then addressed the gathering. In his talk, he said “Every success story has sacrifice incorporated with it. Only when you recognize the sacrifices of successful people will a better society be created. Sharing of knowledge and helping the needy people will only help you grow morally and ethically in life.”
The guest of honor Mr. Andrew J Lock congratulated the students and staff of BIT for taking up this initiative and said, “It’s an enormous gift to help people and be a part of their life.“ In his talk delivered to a packed audience listening in rapt attention, he stressed upon realizing the purpose of life and committing oneself for that. Drawing extensively from his vast experience, he said that it was the warm greeting of an employee at Herman Miller when he went there for the first time that prompted him to join the organization. Its values and commitment to quality made him stick on with it for over two decades.
Mr. Karthik Shethia then gave his talk in which he said that an understanding leader is always the best tonic for the team members to function smoothly and enthusiastically. He presented a video to the audience in which he highlighted how Herman Miller actively participates in the upkeep and nurturing of nature – a ‘green’ concept very much close to one of the founding principles of BIT.
Earlier, Dr. Palakshappa, Principal of BIT, welcomed the gathering. The event was concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Prof. Sheikh Mohideen K.M, Head of Information Science Engineering Department and the rendering of the national anthem.
