Our 1st year MSc Geology students—Shreeraj, Sibikumar, and Dhijesh—actively participated in the oceanographic fieldwork conducted on February 1 and 4, gaining valuable hands-on experience at sea.
During the expedition, they were trained in the operation and scientific applications of key oceanographic instruments, including:
• CTD profiler for measuring conductivity, temperature, and depth to understand water column structure
• Niskin water sampler for collecting discrete water samples from different depths
• Van Veen sediment grab sampler for retrieving seabed sediments for geochemical and ecological analysis
• Zooplankton net for studying plankton diversity and marine food-web dynamics.
Such experiential learning is vital for building the next generation of marine geoscientists and strengthening field-based understanding of ocean processes. Proud of our students for their enthusiasm, teamwork, and scientific curiosity! 👏
