Midnapore College (Bengali: মেদিনীপুর মহাবিদ্যালয়), established in 1873 under the affiliation of Calcutta University and with the status of Govt. Sponsored College in 1956, is the oldest and most renowned of all the colleges in the undivided district of Midnapore. It played the pioneering role in the spread of higher education and also in the Freedom Movement of the Country. Under the aegis of th
e British Government the college began disseminating Western Education in the interest of rational and scientific education which was led by Raja Rammohan Roy. The college became a part and parcel of Bengal Renaissance. Midnapore Collegiate school is in the close vicinity of the college. Khudiram Bose, India's first martyr during the freedom movement against british was from Midnapore city and was a student of Midnapore Collegiate school. Freedom movement has greatly influenced by the midnapore college teachers too. Three teachers of the College – Tarak Das Ghosh, Thakopada Biswas and Binoy Jiban Ghosh – were dismissed from service for their involvement in the Freedom Movement during 1933. In 1985 the college’s affiliation changed from Calcutta University to Vidyasagar University. There are two different section running in the college, Moring section and day section. The campus area of the college is 13.59 acres (55,000 m2).
