*International Day for Preservation of Ozone Layer 2024: A Multi- Event Awareness Campaign*
Swami Premanand Mahavidyalaya, Mukerian under the leadership of Principal Dr. Sameer Sharma, has consistently taken initiatives for societal betterment. In alignment with its vision, the college organized a multi-event awareness campaign on the occasion of the 'International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer.' This initiative, guided by Principal Dr. Sameer Sharma, aimed to sensitize the community and raise public awareness about the importance of ozone layer preservation and environmental sustainability.
On this occasion the Department of Biology, in collaboration with the Red Ribbon and Youth Club of Swami Premanand College, Mukerian, organized a significant awareness campaign. The initiative was spearheaded by Dr. Gurpreet Kaur, Head, Department of Biology and Prof. Anuradha, In-Charge of the Youth and Red Ribbon Club, to commemorate the signing of the Montreal Protocol in 1987, a landmark agreement aimed at protecting the ozone layer.
The event was inaugurated by Principal Dr. Sameer Sharma, who praised the campaign’s objectives of educating students and raising public awareness about ozone depletion. He also encouraged students to actively contribute to societal welfare by educating others on matters that can be mitigated through innovations and precautions.
Principal Dr. Sameer Sharma particularly appreciated the efforts of Biology Society members, including Anshika, Vanshika, Taniya, Simran, Shweta, Khushpreet, Dniksha, Sunakshi, Shikha, Ria, and Jobandeep Singh, who took the lead in making the campaign successful. Students from postgraduate, undergraduate, and collegiate levels enthusiastically participated in various activities, such as poster making, model making, rangoli creation, speeches, PowerPoint presentations, and quizzes.
Dr. Gurpreet Kaur, in her lecture, provided a historical overview of the ozone hole, its causes, and its harmful effects on human health, emphasizing precautionary measures and regulations to protect the Earth from pollution. Prof. Rekha Rani, Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry, discussed the chemical aspects of ozone depletion and the Montreal Protocol's timeline to curb the problem.
Prof. Anuradha highlighted the role of the Youth Club and Red Ribbon Club in societal betterment, encouraging students to raise awareness within the community about environmental hazards affecting future generations. Prof. Tarandeep Kaur, Assistant Professor in the Department of English, skillfully moderated the event, while Prof. Meenu and Prof. Isha from the Department of Biology managed the quiz and other activities. Ms. Paramjit Kaur ensured the smooth conduct of the event with her meticulous arrangements.
Students who excelled in the various activities were awarded certificates, and an on-campus and off-campus rally was organized by the B.Sc. Medical students. The active participation of students like Sapna (M.A. History), Dhwani (B.Com), and the medical students of B.Sc. and XI and XII grades, as well as collegiate school participants, was commendable.
The success of the campaign was attributed to the unwavering support of the SPN College Management Committee and Principal Dr. Sameer Sharma. The organizing team expressed their gratitude, recognizing that the collective effort and positive attitude of all involved contributed to fostering awareness and encouraging meaningful change to combat environmental issues.
