Admissions are now open for 13 Ph.D. programmes for 2024. The total number of seats available for the Ph.D. programmes is 103 across our four campuses in Mumbai, Tuljapur, Guwahati, Tuljapur and Hyderabad.

The Ph.D. programmes being offered are Social Work, Applied Psychology, Health Services Management, Disaster Studies, Management and Labour Studies, Habitat Studies, Development Studies, Women’s Studies, Media & Cultural Studies, Library and Information Science, Rural Development, Social Sciences, and Public Policy.

Renowned educationist and academic administrator Prof. D.P. Singh has been appointed as the Honorable Chancellor of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences for five years by the Ministry of Education, Government of India.

In his illustrious four-decade career, Prof. Singh, former Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), has led several higher education institutions. As UGC Chairman (2018-2021), he has guided 8 inter-university centres of UGC as President of the Governing Council.

He has been Vice-Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi; Dr. Harisingh Gour University, Sagar; and Devi Ahilya University, Indore. He has also held the post of Director of National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

Prof. Singh has contributed as an ex-officio member of the Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE), Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Indian National Commission for Collaboration with UNESCO, Rashtriya Ucchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA); Implementation Committee of National Education Policy-2020; etc.

Prof. Singh has had significant exposure to international programmes and experience handling international projects. He has been instrumental in developing a conducive learning environment, enhancing academic & administrative efficiency, fostering excellence in teaching and research, encouraging global facilitation of higher education and promoting holistic, multidisciplinary, technology-enabled, quality and value-based higher education in India.

Prof. D. P. Singh has been honoured with several awards in the field of education, such as the Environment Leadership Award, Nation Builder Award, Raja Balwant Singh Shiksha Samman, etc.

The Centre for Urban Policy and Governance (CUPG) of the School of Habitat Studies (TISS Mumbai) is organising the CUPG Week from 4 to 10 February 2024. There is an exciting array of round tables, lectures, seminars, policy panels, and master classes by our alumni, policymakers, bureaucrats, academics and international speakers on contemporary challenges and opportunities in shaping the urban and exploring the intersection of gender and climate change. Please see all the posters for detailed information.

On 5 February, there is a Roundtable with six illustrious UPG alumni talking about their experience with "Shaping the Urban", followed by the Keynote Address on the "Challenges and Opportunities of Sustainable Urbanisation" by Aromar Revi (Director, Indian Institute for Human Settlements, Bengaluru). The last programme of the day is a Policy Panel with 5 experts talking about the role of change-makers in crafting sustainable urbanisation policies.

On 6 February, Lajana Manandhar (Coordinator of ACHR, Nepal) will deliver the Annual CUPG Lecture on the experience of Asian cities in bridging state-citizen gaps in basic service provision through community-led processes.

On 9 and 10 February, CUPG is organising a National Seminar on Gender and Climate Change with Asar Social Impact Advisors and KILA.
All the programmes will be held in the S. Parasuraman Hall (6th Floor), Library Building, Main Campus, TISS Mumbai.

Prof. Shankar Das was appointed Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences on 30 January 2024. Congratulations to Prof. Shankar Das from the entire TISS family.

Prof. Shankar Das is a Public Health and Social Care Educator with 30 years of diverse experience in education, research, and capacity development. He is a committed practitioner and educator who has made scholarly contributions to knowledge-building and set exemplary benchmarks in practice. He has trained and provided human resources development consultancy to health care and social care agencies, hospitals, and community-based rural and urban agencies. Prof. Das has designed, planned, monitored, and evaluated health and social care delivery systems in India, Myanmar, Bangladesh, the USA, and the UK. The keystone of his work has always been inclusive development, promotion of indigenous systems of Indian knowledge, equity, and social justice.

Prof. Shankar Das is also Dean of Academic Affairs; Dean of the School of Health Systems Studies; and Project Director of Saksham (a Field Action Project) at TISS.

The School of Social Work ( ) invites social work practitioners, research scholars, and teachers/academics to participate in the Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on "Theory for Social Work Practice".

To be conducted online from 29 January to 2 February 2024, the FDP aims to demystify social theory to facilitate its application to the field and foster reflexive practice.

The last day to apply is 27 January 2024.

Congratulations to the School of Social Work (SSW) for winning the 9th FICCI Higher Education Excellence Awards 2023 in the Category Institutional Social Responsibility.

Prof. Vijay Raghavan (Centre for Criminology and Justice, SSW) received the award on behalf of the Dean, SSW, faculty colleagues, students and Field Action Project (FAP) leaders and staff, in a ceremony organised on 29 November 2023, by FICCI as part of the 9th Higher Education Summit held at the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar International Centre, New Delhi.

According to the FICCI website, “Winning a FICCI Higher Education Excellence Award signifies an institution's unwavering commitment to excellence and establishes them as a benchmark for quality education. It serves as a testament to their dedication, leadership, and collaboration with industry partners, demonstrating their ability to deliver exceptional education and create a positive societal impact.”

TISS, in collaboration with the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research, Mumbai, organised a Symposium on “Strategic Human Resource Management in Higher Education” based on the book written by Dr. Jai Mohan Pandit and Prof. Bino Paul, on 11 October 2023.

The book, which has been endorsed by eminent scholars and professionals in the field, offers a roadmap for Indian institutions to manage their human resources to foster excellence and progress strategically. The Symposium featured experts such as Prof. Furqan Qamar, Prof. Shalini Bharat, Prof. Jandhyala B.G. Tilak, Prof. N.V. Varghese, Prof. K Narayanan, Dr. Satish Pradhan, Prof. Basanta K. Pradhan, Prof. Partha Chatterjee, Dr. Prem Kumar, Prof. R.C. Datta, Prof. Madhushree Sekher and others, who discussed various facets of HRM in higher education and the implications of the National Education Policy 2020.
