The Offshore Lifeboat Coxswain (OLC) Practical Training at Sagar Offshore Maritime Academy (SOMA) is designed to provide candidates with hands-on experience, real-time vessel handling skills, and the confidence required to operate a totally enclosed lifeboat safely during an offshore emergency.
During the practical training sessions, participants learn and perform:
Launching and recovery operations of the lifeboat from the davit system
Boarding procedures and passenger safety management
On-water maneuvering, including steering, propulsion, and control techniques
Emergency procedures, such as abandoning the platform, dealing with capsizing hazards, and ensuring crew survival
Communication protocols and teamwork during offshore evacuation scenarios
Inspection, readiness checks, and operational maintenance of the lifeboat and associated systems
This practical module is conducted under the guidance of experienced maritime instructors who ensure every candidate develops competence, confidence, and leadership essential for emergency response at sea.
