RULES FOR THE MOOT COURT COMPETITION
1. Team Composition:
a) Each team consisting of two members shall represent the plaintiff or defendant (to be assigned by draw of lots).
b) Each team will be given a unique Code number, which will thereafter be his/her identity.
2. Rounds:
a) The Moot Court Competition shall comprise of the following two rounds:
A. Preliminary Round on 22nd September 2012
B. Final Round on 22nd September 2012
For the Preliminary Round i.e. Round I, each team will be assigned to a particular mock court room by the K.C. Law, MCA.
1. Each team will argue its pre-assigned side.
2. One team with highest overall score from each of the mock court room will qualify for the Final Round.
3. If there are a higher number of Plaintiffs or Defendants for the final round, the concerned participants will argue ex-parte.
4. The organizers reserve the right to change the format of the competition at any time.
3. Memorials:
I. The memorial shall necessarily consist of the following:
(a) Cover Page
(b) Table of Contents
(c) List of Abbreviations
(d) Index of Authorities
(e) Statement of Jurisdiction
(f) Statement of Facts
(g) Issues Raised
(h) Summary of Arguments
(i) Body of Pleadings
(j) Prayer
II) All the teams shall submit three (3) copies of the memorials for their side.
III) The teams shall mention on the Memorial’s covering page the unique code assigned. No team will mention any personal information/details on any of their memorials.
IV) The Plaintiff memorials MUST have light blue paper covers while the Defendants must have light red.
V) All memorials submitted must as far as possible comply with the following general rules:
(a) Memorials must be printed on white A4 size paper with black ink only. Moreover, it should not be more than 15 pages including contents mentioned in clause 3.I. (a) to 3.I. (j)
(b) The font used must be Times New Roman, size 12 with double line spacing.
(c) The Harvard Blue Book style of footnoting must be followed as far as practicable.
(d) The font of footnotes must be Times New Roman, Size 10, single line spacing.
(e) Each page of the memorial must have a margin of one inch on all sides, excluding its page number. Page numbers must be given on the top right hand corner.
4. Oral Submissions:
a) For the first round each team shall have a maximum of 10 minutes to present their oral submissions. Each speaker representing the plaintiff will have 4 minutes for initial arguments and 2 minutes for rebuttals while the speaker representing the defendant will have 5 minutes for arguments. Sur-rebuttals will be subject to the discretion of the concerned judges.
b) In the final round each team shall have a maximum of 20 minutes to present their oral submissions. The plaintiff will have 8 minutes for arguments and 4 minutes for rebuttals while the defendants will have 10 minutes for arguments. Sur-rebuttals will be subject to the discretion of the concerned judges.
c) Any extension of the prescribed time limit shall be subject to the sole discretion of the concerned Judges and no complaints/appeals regarding the same will be entertained.
5. Marking Criteria:
• Following shall be the marking criteria and the marks allotted per speaker.

• Each speaker shall be marked out of 50.
• The first round will be in front of a single judge bench, thus making the total team marks out of 100.
• The final round will be in front of a division bench, thus making the total team marks out of 200.
• The decision of the judges shall be final and binding. Any grievances in respect to the markings shall be made to the General Secretary (MCA), in writing within 7 days and not afterwards.
• The mark sheet shall be displayed on the notice board after the results of the concerned moot court are announced.
5. Dress Code:
a) Male participants shall be formally dressed in black trousers, white shirt, tie, and jacket.
b) Female participants shall be formally dressed in black trousers, white shirt and jacket or an appropriate Indian alternative (in black and white only).
