Demystifying Union Budget 2026-27: Empowering the Leaders of Tomorrow 🇮🇳

What does the Union Budget mean for a student, a professional, or the common citizen? Is it just a document of complex numbers, or is it the story of a nation’s journey? On February 6th, 2026, The Economics Club Mumbai continued its long-standing tradition of bridging the gap between policy and the classroom. Our President, Dr. Shashi Panikar, visited the vibrant campus of Patkar Varde College to deliver an insightful analysis of the Union Budget 2026-27.

Addressing a keen audience of undergraduate students from various programmes including BAF, B.Com (Banking & Insurance), and BBA, Dr. Panikar transformed the "formidable" budget into a creative and accessible narrative.

Key Highlights of the Session:

The Evolution of the Budget: Understanding the past to better predict and shape our future.

Budget Simplified: Breaking down complex fiscal jargon into student-friendly concepts.

Critical Analysis of Key Themes & Sectoral Impact: A critical look at the strengths, gaps, and how different sectors stand to gain or pivot this year.

The session culminated in an interactive discussion, where students engaged with the budget not just as a financial statement, but as a roadmap for the country’s progress.

At The Economics Club Mumbai, we believe that the budget is a story of how our nation moves forward. For years, we have been committed to demystifying these numbers for students and educators alike, ensuring that the next generation of financial leaders can engage with the economy with clarity and confidence. A huge thank you to the faculty and students of Patkar Varde College for their enthusiastic participation!

“Enhancing teachers’ skills and capabilities through regular training workshops, and rewarding excellence in teaching and research are quintessential to transform teaching and learning of economics”, emphasised Dr. Alvin Birdi, Director of The Economics Network, during a meeting with The Economics Club Mumbai at the University of Bristol on 14 May 2025. The much-awaited meeting was part of the Transformative Educational Experience Programme (TEEP) 2025, organised by The Economics Club Mumbai.

Dr. Shashi Panikar, the President of The Economics Club Mumbai, along with the teachers who participated in TEEP 2025 (teachers from Vivekanand Education Society's College of Arts, Science & Commerce, the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, and the former Principal of S. M. Shetty College of Science, Commerce & Management Studies), had an interesting meeting on the ways to improve teaching and learning of Economics and other social sciences with Dr. Alvin Birdi, Professor of Economics Education at University of Bristol School of Economics, Jahir Islam, International Director, University of Bristol School of Economics, Dr. Martin Poulter, Head of ICT at The Economics Network and Ashley Lait, Centre Manager of The Economics Network.

The Economics Network is the largest and longest-established academic organisation devoted to improving the teaching and learning of economics in universities. It runs the Developments in Economics Education (DEE) Conference, a platform which encourages and shares innovations in teaching and learning. The Economics Network conducts regular surveys to research the current state of teaching and learning in Economics Higher Education in the UK and shares a noteworthy collection of teaching ideas, case studies on economics education, and educational materials on economics through its website, seminars, and the DEE Conference.

Our engagement with The Economics Network over the years through DEE Conferences, TEEP, and the personal interactions of our President with the Network have always been very stimulating. Moreover, through the sessions, organised by The Economics Network and the University of Bristol School of Economics in association with The Economics Club Mumbai, on ‘Embedding Employability in Economics Courses’ by Dr. Anthi Chondrogianni and ‘The Discussion on innovations in teaching and learning Economics’ by Prof. Jahir Islam, we could empower a large community of economics teachers and students in Mumbai with a pool of ideas to transform economics education.

Organisations like The Economics Network are eager to support Indian universities that are willing to embark on a journey of improving teaching practices. But are we ready to work with them to facilitate a transformation in the way we teach?

Student members of The Economics Club Mumbai (ECM) from junior colleges across Mumbai, visited the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE), Pune as part of the Transformative Educational Experience Programme (TEEP) 2024 organised by The Economics Club Mumbai.

ECM was delighted to receive an invitation from the prestigious Gokhale Institute to visit their historic campus with its student members. Students had a delightful day at the institute filled with enriching discussions with professors and current students of GIPE. The Vice-Chancellor of GIPE, Dr. Ajit Ranade, eminent economist, academician and the former Group Executive President and Chief Economist of the Aditya Birla Group, enthralled students with his informative and engaging discussion on various issues ranging from the intensive courses offered by GIPE to emerging career opportunities in the field of economics. Students got interesting first-hand insights on the study opportunities and admission process at GIPE, the teaching and learning methods adopted, and the preparation required to crack the entrance tests, through interactions with faculty at GIPE including those with Dr. Kiran Limaye, Assistant Professor at their Centre for Excellence in Entrepreneurship and Development and Dr. Saylee Jog. Moreover, second and third-year B.Sc. Economics students at GIPE shared their experiences about the student life at GIPE.

Dr. Shashi Panikar, President, ECM and the student members ECM were honoured to visit such an eminent institution, the primary objective of which is to provide education and conduct research in all fields of economics that contributes towards the enhancement of economic betterment and social welfare and to impart training to researchers in the socio-economic dimensions of Indian society. ECM would like to thank the Vice-Chancellor, faculty members, students and Mr. Akash Gulankar, Communications Officer at GIPE for facilitating and supporting this visit.

TEEP aims to inspire young students, especially girls and students from the central suburbs of Mumbai, to dream big and work towards achieving their dreams. Over the years ECM has been introducing students and teachers to some of the best educational institutions in India and Europe to increase awareness of diverse, interdisciplinary study programmes in social sciences and to enable inspirational exchanges. Usually, students visit universities across the world as part of TEEP, however, this year due to the general elections in May the international visit couldn’t take place, and hence ECM decided to take students to one of India’s best educational institutions.

We were delighted to visit Ms. Swati Kapadia, CEO of the Forum of Free Enterprise on 15th March. The visit to Forum’s office took us down memory lane. We reminisced about our interactions with the Forum from the days of Mr. M.R. Pai and Mr. Nani Palkhiwala to our most recent interaction at the Annual Youth Elocution Competition. We spoke about the passionate advocacy of the common man’s rights by Mr. M. R. Pai and Mr. Nani Palkhiwala and the immense knowledge gained during each interaction with Shri Minoo Shroff. The Forum of Free Enterprise is a non-political and non-partisan organisation that has been relentlessly working on educating the public about free enterprise and its connection with democracy, and empowering youth.

The Forum of Free Enterprise and its office bearers including Mr. S. Divakara, Former Director-General, of the Forum have always supported The Economics Club Mumbai's activities. The Forum has connected us with industry stalwarts and economists who participated as guest speakers during Arth-Manthan, Mumbai’s first economics festival started by The Economics Club Mumbai and during the various teacher training workshops and industry-academia interactions that we organised together with the Forum. Further, we have encouraged students to participate in the lecture series, leadership camps and elocution competitions organised by the Forum knowing the immense opportunities for personal and professional growth offered by these events.

We look forward to continuing this strong association with the Forum of Free Enterprise in the coming years and discussed the possibility of collaborating for events in the coming year including the Transformative Educational Experience Programme (TEEP).

On International Women’s Day, reminiscing about our visit to Girton College, University of Cambridge last year… Participants of the Transformative Educational Experience Programme (TEEP) 2023 organised by The Economics Club Mumbai visited Girton College, the UK’s first residential institution which offered university education for women - a bold step towards women’s full and equal participation in political, social and economic life. The Economics Club Mumbai has always promoted girls' education. It has inspired young girls and women to aim for excellence in higher education and to challenge and break the social barriers that prevent them from achieving their goals. Hence, it was an honour to visit Girton College and interact with academics, staff members and students from Girton. We were delighted that Dr. Elisabeth Kendall, Mistress of Girton College, Dr. Collin Constantine, Assistant Professor of Economics, Director of Studies & Fellow of Economics at Girton College, Victoria Argent, Head of Student Services at Girton and Josh Rickard, M.Phil. Finance and Economics student interacted with our participants. Visiting the campus, interacting with the team at Girton and having lunch at the prestigious dining hall at Girton was very inspiring for our participants!
