🥳👏Centre for Climate Studies, IIT Bombay (CCS-IITB) is growing!

Happy to welcome Prof. Milind Sharma as our 8th core faculty!

At CCS-IITB, he plans to lead a research group focused on the observational analysis, numerical modeling, and prediction of high-impact weather events.

His research interests span radar and satellite meteorology, regional
weather forecasting, cloud modeling, aerosol-convection interactions, process-based understanding of mesoscale convective systems, and the application of AI methods to extreme weather prediction.

His past research has examined convective storm dynamics, microphysics,
electrification, and initiation using dual-polarization radar observations and storm-scale numerical modeling. He has also studied mesoscale thermodynamic variability, sea-breeze and low-level triggering mechanisms, aerosol-convection interactions, and their influence on storm intensity and evolution.

He has a PhD in Atmospheric Sciences and Meteorology from Purdue University, Masters degree in Hydrology and Water Resources from IISc Bangalore post a BTech in Civil Engg. from NIT JALANDHAR.

You can reach out to him at [email protected].

🌧️ ☔ Centre for Climate Studies at IIT Bombay is excited to announce the relaunch of mumbaiflood.in!

As Mumbai experiences increasingly intense monsoon rainfall and urban flooding, access to timely, reliable, and actionable information is essential. We unveil the revamped mumbaiflood.in portal, developed to support flood preparedness for citizens, municipal authorities, and disaster management agencies.

mumbaiflood.in will display:

🔵🟢🟡🟠🔴Next 3-day Hyperlocal Rainfall Forecasts: to better anticipate changing weather conditions across Mumbai.

📍📄Citizen Flood Reporting: Citizens can report waterlogging and flooding in their areas through an easy-to-use reporting form https://mumbaiflood.in/report-flood. These reports will be displayed on an interactive Mumbai map, helping build a community-driven picture of flood impacts across the city.

🖲️Near Real-Time Water Level Monitoring: View water level information from flood-prone locations across Mumbai, where water level sensors installed by IIT Bombay continuously monitor conditions https://mumbaiflood.in/water-level

🚆 Transport Status: Stay informed about near real-time waterlogging status along Mumbai's suburban railway network through the dedicated Transport section.

🆕🛰️Coming Soon (Stay Tuned!)

Over the next week, we'll be rolling out several exciting new capabilities, including:

• ⛈️ 3-hour rainfall forecasts updated at 30-minute intervals

• 🌊 An advanced flood forecasting model for Mumbai

• 📡 15-minute and 90-minute rainfall nowcasts using weather radar data from the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), India Meteorological Department (IMD)

This platform is the outcome of collaborative efforts in meteorology, hydrology, artificial intelligence, remote sensing, and urban flood forecasting, with the shared goal of making Mumbai more resilient to flooding.

We invite everyone to explore the new portal, use its features, and share your feedback via [email protected]. Together, we can build a more informed and resilient Mumbai.

🌐 Visit: https://mumbaiflood.in

A heartfelt thank you to our entire team of researchers*, developers^, and collaborators at Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, whose dedication made this relaunch possible.

^mumbaiflood.in website backend was first developed by Deepak Silaych and its App version by Gulshan Kumar in 2024; rebuilt in 2025 by Muhammed Rashid with front end design by Tanmay Kuwalekar.
This year the portal is being maintained by 4Fox Solutions Pvt. Ltd.

The Living Lab initiative is central to IIT Bombay’s vision for sustainability. We from Centre for Climate Studies, IIT Bombay have been arguing that it begins with a simple but powerful idea: understand before you act.

We emphasize that robust monitoring and baseline data are essential first steps. Without them, even well-intentioned technologies can backfire, leading to maladaptation -- a challenge already highlighted in the IPCC AR6.

Taking this vision into the field, our very own Prof. Jaideep Joshi and his team are establishing a Living Lab in the Western Ghats to closely study and monitor forest ecosystems.

Curious to see how this work unfolds on the ground? Watch this short video from the Treehouse research group’s first field campaign.
