Sophia College Magazine 2018-2019

Sophia College Magazine 2018-2019 This is the official page for The Sophia College Magazine, the annual student-run magazine of The Sophia College for Women, Mumbai. You have a story.

We know you do. It may be a chronicle of your journey through life, or adventures in a fantasy you daydream when classes are boring. It may be something you penned down and abandoned last summer, or it may be the incoherent fragments of a tale you do not yet call a story. Still, you have a tale to tell, and we would love to help you share it. Sophia College Magazine 2017-18 welcomes short stories, poetry, non-fiction, and other written pieces you have to offer.

'Aubade' by Dhruvi Modi talks about Sunlight, and the way it comforts her. The Magazine Team frequently commiserates over lack of inspiration and stress. So, for the next few days, we will be posting a song on our Instagram story every day, in the hope that our playlist eases your writer's block. We're accepting submissions till 15th December, 2018. Cheers!

Sylvia Plath concludes her poem 'Mushrooms' with these powerful lines that are relevant now more than ever.

Movements such as , protests for LGBTQIA+ rights, and arrests of activists who expressed dissent have taken our nation by the storm. The time has come for us to voice our concerns, to get our feet in the door towards justice.

We'd love to hear your views in the form of prose (fiction or nonfiction), poetry or photography. The writings may be in any language, and have to be sent in a Word document to [email protected].

"The blue room caught my attention instinctively. I fell in love with its old world charm. It was like staring at the past. A slice of history manifested before my eyes. A sense of nostalgia pervaded the room and I wanted to capture it in all its rawness and venerable beauty," says Theresa Tharakan, a TYBMM Journalism student at Sophia.

This was Tess's tale, and we're eager to hear yours. We urge you to send in your own photographs from your travels, along with the story behind it.

Please attach clear photographs, along with the description in a Word document, and send them to [email protected] by December 15, 2018!

For further queries, please DM us.

Cheers

Dance is symbolic of a plethora of things in our culture. Classical dance has its place of importance, attributed to it being rooted in our culture and being a means to preserve it. It is a form of expression that enriches you. Every taal, every step is sewn into the fabric of the performance, with a story that truly sings. Our college encourages students to perform in an effort to nurture present talent.

Sangeet Bari is a dance drama about the historical evolution of Lavani. It is a theatre production which combines multiple narratives, such as Lavani dancers, the musicians, the narrator and the customers. The performance was written by Mr Bhushan Korgaonkar and directed by Ms Savitri Medhatul, and was the finale of the conference on "Folk Performance Traditions : Theory and Practice.”

"Many feel that because rap songs use vile and demeaning words, they cannot be considered as art. It has no aesthetic value. But these same words convey the stark nature and struggles of life. The same words, through their lyrics, convey the truth of a fragmented reality under the glossy surfaces, and people listen to these songs because they can hear something as raw as empathy."
