Neurosurgery Education and Training School (NETS)
NETS is a collaborative initiative by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India and Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, India to disseminate information about the anatomy, physiology, pathology, diagnosis and surgical management of diseases involving the Central Nervous System and cutting e
dge research focused on development of skills training modules and curriculum, global e-Learning platform, computerized evaluation of neurosurgery skills and virtual reality simulation platforms. Neurosurgery Skills Training Facility (NSTF)
The Department of Neurosurgery at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi started the Experimental Micro-neurosurgery Laboratory in 1971 through the efforts of Prof. Tandon and Prof. Banerji (Emeritus Professors, Department of Neurosurgery). The training laboratory was expanded in 2000 for training and experimental research work of M.Ch Neurosurgery Residents of the Department of Neurosurgery. Neurosurgery Skills Training Facility and Experimental Laboratory was established at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences with the aid of Extramural grants from the following to create environment for state-of-the art neurosurgery skills training and cutting edge research (http://aiimsnets.org/about.asp):
1) DST, Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt. of India, DST-FIST Project (Prof. A. K. Mahapatra/ Prof. B. S. Sharma- PIs, Dr. Ashish Suri- Project Coordinator)
2) DBT+BMBF-Indo-German Collaboration Project, Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt. of India, (PIs: Prof. Martin Bettag- Germany, Dr Ashish Suri-India)
3) DHR-ICMR, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India, (Dr Ashish Suri- PI)
The facility is equipped with neurosurgery operation theatre like infrastructure with various high-tech equipment. Resources for round the clock animal experiments and cadaver dissection are available in collaboration with Departments of Anatomy, Central Animal Facility and Forensic Medicine, AIIMS, New Delhi, India. Round the year daily skills training sessions, short-term training and international workshops at Neurosurgery Education and Training School (NETS), AIIMS, lead to the standardization of the hands-on skills training modules. Neurosurgery skills training imparted to align with the course curriculum of MCh, DNB and MD Neurosurgery under five modular approach is designed to improve the learning curve of the trainees by giving them platform to hone their skills by initially performing simple tasks and then advance to the complex ones. (http://aiimsnets.org/nsskillstraining.asp). At Neurosurgery Skills Training Facility (NSTF), we formulate, standardize and evaluate the efficacy of neurosurgery skills training and sub-divided each skill into simple tasks and evaluable components of their performance. These stages of learning would provide the novice surgeon a better experience on procedure based virtual reality simulation platforms and subsequently towards real operative environment.
