In an ongoing endeavour and commitment of Ghani Khan Choudhury Institute of Engineering and Technology (GKCIET), Malda to enhance the students’ on-campus placement, a Finishing School Programme was organized at GKCIET Malda from 27 February to 1 March 2026 (Friday, Saturday and Sunday).
The objective of the progamme included enhancing students’ employability skills, professional behaviour, aptitude, communication ability, and career readiness. The three-day programme witnessed a series of interactive sessions delivered by external experts, alumni, and professional trainers aimed at preparing students for recruitment processes and workplace expectations. The first day focused on Interview and Professional Behaviour Mastery, where Mr. Sumit Sinha, Corporate Trainer, conducted sessions on group discussion techniques, personal interview strategies, and corporate etiquette. Students were introduced to the structure and dynamics of group discussions, effective participation strategies, and real interview scenarios through mock GD rounds and mock interview sessions. He also explained the difference between HR and technical interviews and demonstrated structured answering techniques such as the STAR method to help students present their experiences confidently. The day also included discussions on workplace culture, professional etiquette, and goal setting to help students plan their career pathways. At the beginning of the 2nd Day Mr.Subhankar Maity, and Ms.Adrita Sarkar, 2024 graduating batch from Food Technology department addressed the gathering on career orientation. The day also focused on Aptitude Enhancement and Personality Development and began with an Alumni Speak session, where alumni shared insights on the importance of professional development, career planning, and industry expectations. Experts from the Rice Training Institute, Malda conducted sessions on Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation, where students were trained in analytical reasoning, puzzle solving, and data interpretation strategies commonly used in recruitment aptitude tests, followed by a mock aptitude test to assess students’ problem-solving abilities in a timed environment. In the afternoon sessions, Ms. Sonali Paul, Counsellor and Personality Development Coach, delivered engaging sessions on Personality Development, Professional Ethics and Human Values, and Handling Success and Failure, highlighting the importance of self-awareness, confidence building, ethical behaviour, emotional intelligence, resilience, and stress management in professional life. The third day of the programme focused on Self Branding and Communication Skills. The day began with an alumni-led session on Self Branding, which covered résumé writing, LinkedIn profile development, SWOT analysis, and strategies for aligning personal strengths with career opportunities. Mr.Korok Sengupta, 2024 graduating batch of Electrical Engineering Department and Mr.Arghadeep Chowdhury 2024 graduating batch of Mechanical Engineering department of the institute also addressed the gathering on the topic. This was followed by interactive sessions conducted by Mr. Aniruddha Chowdhury, Professional Trainer in Communication Skills and Personality Development, who trained students in communication essentials, articulation, confidence building, effective self-introduction, group discussion participation, and professional networking behaviour. Students actively participated in exercises and discussions designed to strengthen their communication and interpersonal skills. The programme concluded with a reflection and assessment activity where students reviewed their learning and submitted updated résumés and LinkedIn profiles as part of the assignment. The programme received an overwhelmingly positive response from the students, who appreciated the practical orientation of the sessions, the opportunity to interact with industry experts, and the exposure to real-world recruitment scenarios. Many participants expressed that the mock interviews, aptitude practice, communication training, and personality development sessions significantly boosted their confidence and helped them better understand the expectations of employers.
Overall, the Finishing School Programme proved to be highly beneficial in bridging the gap between academic learning and professional requirements, thereby contributing meaningfully to the students’ career preparedness and employability.
