The Department of English, Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Patiala, Punjab hosted a talk with the eminent author Manjula Padmanabhan in the online. The talk was conducted as an open and reflective dialogue unravelling Padmanabhan’s literary vision, narrative strategies, and engagement with contemporary social concerns.
Padmanabhan discussed in detail the complexity of narrative construction and character development in her works, emphasising that her writing resists rigid categorisation, particularly the tendency to label texts as strictly dystopian. She underscored that narrative and character dynamics remain central to her creative process, often taking precedence over genre classifications.
She spoke at length on how her writings draw significantly from real-world social contexts and lived experiences, engaging deeply with evolving societal and gender dynamics. She highlighted the layered nature of gender relations in her narratives, rejecting simplistic or binary interpretations of gender and identity. Padmanabhan also expressed her discomfort with academic expectations that demand fixed or definitive readings of literary texts, advocating instead for nuanced and open-ended interpretations.
The discussion extended to her engagement with language and identity, where she spoke about her monolingual background in English and its influence on her writing. She also reflected on her childhood journey from Pakistan to India, offering insights into cultural continuities and shared social realities across borders. Padmanabhan further addressed the role of humour in her work, describing it as a crucial narrative tool that lowers readers’ defences while enabling the communication of deeper and often unsettling truths. The conversation also touched upon themes of societal violence and its normalisation, urging greater awareness of everyday injustices without resorting to oversimplified explanations.
Towards the end of the talk, the author emphasised the complexity of concepts such as freedom, calling for a reassessment of how freedom is defined and understood in contemporary society.
