Popular Talk on DNA Fingerprinting by Dr. Madhusudan Reddy (Scientist, CDFD)

Department of Biological Sciences at BITS Pilani, Pilani organized a popular talk by Dr. Madhusudan Reddy (Scientist, CDFD, Hyderabad) on “DNA profiling in criminal investigations and mass disaster victim identification” on 29 September 2025. Students from Birla High School and Kids Garden Senior Secondary School participated in the talk in addition to BITS students, faculty and staff members. The talk was interactive and the hall remained full the entire duration of the lecture. Several students from both the schools and BITS asked interesting questions and also took some career guidance in forensic sciences from Dr. Reddy.

The Central Instrumentation Facility and Department of Biological Sciences,BITS Pilani (Pilani Campus), in collaboration with Carl Zeiss, conducted a three-day workshop on Widefield and Confocal Microscopy from July 24–26, 2025. The event featured hands-on sessions and expert lectures, enhancing participants' understanding of advanced imaging techniques.

Department of Biological Sciences, BITS Pilani, Pilani Campus, organized an educational research laboratory visit for Classes XI and XII students (who have opted for Biology or Biotechnology) of Birla Balika Vidyapeeth, Vidya Vihar, Pilani, on 2nd May 2025. This initiative was conducted as a Scientific Social Responsibility associated with the ANRF (SERB) core Research Grant led by Dr. Sudeshna Mukherjee (CRG/2022/005172). The visit introduced students to experimental biology and career paths in life sciences.

A training program on "Biosafety and Biohazards" was conducted by the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBSC) & Department of Biological Sciences, BITS Pilani, Pilani Campus on March 22, 2025. This extensive training included expert talks from the guest speaker Prof. Souvik Bhattacharjee (Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi), and our faculties Prof. Jitendra Panwar (Chairman, IBSC), Prof. Rajdeep Chowdhury (Head, Dept. of Biological Sciences, & Member, IBSC), Prof. Sudeshna Mukherjee (Member, IBSC), Prof. Shilpi Garg (Member, IBSC), and Dr. Soumitra Ghosh (Assistant Professor, Dept. of Biological Sciences, BITS Pilani), Prof. Prabhat Nath Jha, (Member Secretary, IBSC), and Prof. A.K. Das. Approximately 33 participants including faculties, PhD scholars and ME students attended the training program and learnt various aspects of biosafety in a lab, regulations and guidelines for recombinant-DNA research, introduction to regulatory bodies for biosafety, and bio-waste management, regulations and guidelines for biocontainment and waste management and proper disposal of biohazards as per the guidelines and regulations by DBT, Government of India. A quiz was also organized at the end of the session to sum up and evaluate the understanding of the biosafety practices.

Science Day was celebrated by The Department of Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics, BITS Pilani, Pilani Campus on 28th February 2025. The class 9th and 11th Standard school children were invited to attend an exciting session full of scientific talks, quizzes and fun demonstrations of experiments as per DST theme: Empowering Indian Youth for Global Leadership in Science & Innovation for Viksit Bharat.

A Colloquium Lecture Series entitled “Industry-Academia Convergence in Modern Biology” was organized by the Department of Biological Sciences, BITS Pilani, Pilani Campus on February 22, 2025.
Several research talks were organized as part of this event. They are-
1. “Translating Innovation in Biotechnology'' was delivered by Dr. Amulya K Panda, Associate Director, Panacea Biotec Limited.
2. “The Dynamic Duo: Controlling Immunity and Switching to Biological Nitrogen Fixation Inside a Root Nodule”, was delivered by Dr. Senjuti Sinharoy, Scientist V, National Institute of Plant Genome Research (NIPGR), New Delhi-
3. “Industry-Academia Partnership – Lessons from a Few Case Studies” was delivered by Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, President, Zydus Cadila, Ahmedabad.
4. “Biomimetic Tissue Implants: Bridging Bench and Bedside” was delivered by Dr. Santosh S. Mathapati, Associate Professor, Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (THSTI), Faridabad
5. “Targeting Mycobacterium tuberculosis LexA: To Combat Antimicrobial Resistance” was delivered by Dr. Saravanan Matheshwaran, Associate Professor, BSBE, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur.
6. “Regulations for Drug Development” was delivered by Dr. Saurabh Chandra, Associate Director, DABUR Research Foundation, Ghaziabad.
7. “Exploration of Multi-Target Genome Editing for Translational and Basic Research in Plant Science” Dr. Rupesh Deshmukh, Head, Department of Biotechnology, Central University of Haryana,
8. “Stem Cell Therapies: Intricacies and Application” was delivered by Dr. Amitava Das, Senior Principal Scientist, Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad
On this occasion, the research scholars of the Department presented their research through a poster presentation session.

Excitement in Science: Insights and Perspectives- Talk-9 Department of Biological Sciences, BITS Pilani, Pilani Campus conducted a series of research talks by eminent scientists/researchers working in India or abroad. As part of this endeavor, on 20th February 2025, The Department of Biological Sciences BITS Pilani, Pilani Campus has organized a research talk entitled, "Combating Immune Resistance in Cancer: Leveraging Dendritic Cell Therapy to Overcome Tumor Evasion" delivered by Prof. Sumit Kumar Hira, Assistant Professor, University of Burdwan.

The DBT Builder National Facility on Epigenetics and Genome Editing was inaugurated by Prof. V. M. Katoch, former DG of ICMR on 24 October 2024. The facility was developed with DBT and BITS support by faculties from the department of Biosciences and Pharmacy of BITS Pilani ,Pilani Campus.
The event also featured a symposium on "Epigenetics and Genome Editing in Human Diseases," highlighting key advancements in these fields and fostering discussions on future research directions.
