Symbiosis School of Economics

Symbiosis School of Economics SSE aims to provide an environment for an incredible educational experience & to evolve into a major research & consultancy centre. www.sse.ac.in

Incepted in 2008, SSE is a bright, young, vigorous and growing institution, with a demonstrable record of success. This very niche institute seeks to develop intellectual discipline, critical and analytical assessment, which will result in rational thinking, along with an understanding of the need for constrained optimization, and a strong urge to strive towards achieving equilibrium. We at SSE, achieve these goals in an educational environment committed to excellence and academic freedom.

Yashvardhan Singh and Smyan Banerjee, second-year students at SSE, secured 4th position at the Young Economists Research Conference (YERC), hosted by the Meghnad Desai Academy of Economics.

Their research on “Comparative Analysis of Cash Versus In-kind Transfer Programs” reflected strong analytical thinking along with meaningful policy insights.

This recognition is especially significant as it marks the third time an SSE team has been awarded at YERC, and the second consecutive year of achievement.

We sincerely thank our faculty members for their constant guidance and support in making this possible.

As SSE marks its 18th Annual Day and moves toward the 19th Foundation Day, we take a moment to reflect on a journey that began in 2008 and continues to grow stronger every year.

Founded with the visionary aspiration of Dr. S. B. Mujumdar to build an institution on the lines of the London School of Economics, the Symbiosis School of Economics (SSE) has evolved into a vibrant centre of academic excellence.

From a modest beginning with a small faculty, SSE today stands as a dynamic institution with 100% PhD-qualified faculty, 21 recognised PhD guides, 45+ doctoral degrees awarded, and a strong network of 3,500+ alumni across the globe.

Our research ecosystem continues to expand, reflected in nearly 200 Scopus-indexed publications and impactful policy research projects.

Our growing academic community includes:
• 15 Undergraduate batches
• 14 Postgraduate cohorts
• A thriving PhD programme since 2009

SSE students and alumni continue to make us proud, reaching institutions such as Purdue University, University College Dublin, and the IMF, while also contributing to leading organisations including Deloitte, EY, CRISIL, and Google.

This year marks several important milestones:
• Expansion of the M.Sc. programme with dual divisions
• Faculty promotions strengthening academic leadership
• Expanded international collaborations, including pathways with the University of Bristol and exchange opportunities across Europe and Southeast Asia
• Continued growth of the Symbiosis Centre for Urban Studies (SCUS)

Through initiatives like the SSE Policy Lab, Macro Perspectives, and national dialogues on India’s statistical systems, SSE remains actively engaged with contemporary economic thought and policy discourse.

As we move toward two decades of SSE in 2027–28, our vision remains clear:
to strengthen global pathways, deepen interdisciplinary research, foster policy engagement, and nurture future thought leaders.

Because institutions are not built by bricks and mortar — they are built by people, ideas, and purpose.

Here’s to the journey ahead.
