A proud academic achievement for the Department of Pathology, Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University) Medical College, Pune, as two second-year postgraduate students participated in the 38th European Congress of Pathology, held in Stockholm, Sweden, from 12–16 September 2026.

Dr. Astha Gupta and Dr. Divya Chavan presented their poster titled “Teratoid Carcinosarcoma in a Pelvic Mass: Histomorphological Spectrum with Heterologous Differentiation” at the prestigious international academic forum.

With approximately 8,000 delegates in attendance, the conference provided a valuable platform for academic exchange, featuring international speakers, guest lectures and engaging panel discussions across contemporary advances in pathology.

Their participation and research presentation reflect the Medical College’s commitment to fostering research, encouraging postgraduate academic excellence and providing students with opportunities to engage with the global medical community.

Advancing Women’s Health Through Evidence & Research

A proud academic achievement for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology as Dr. Shrish Raut is the first author of a systematic review and meta-analysis protocol accepted for publication.
Titled “Diagnostic accuracy of high-risk HPV DNA and cytology in diagnosing precancerous and early malignant cervical lesions: a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis,” the publication focuses on strengthening the evidence base for the early detection and diagnosis of cervical lesions.
By examining the diagnostic accuracy of high-risk HPV DNA testing and cytology, this work contributes to the ongoing pursuit of evidence-based approaches to cervical cancer screening and prevention.
This publication reflects a commitment to research, collaboration and evidence-driven women’s healthcare, with the potential to support stronger screening strategies and better-informed clinical practice.

The Department of Pathology, Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be) University Medical College, Pune, organised an academic programme on “Advances in Breast and Lung Cancer” on 12 August 2026, bringing together approximately 60 postgraduate students, junior pathologists and senior pathologists for an enriching exchange of knowledge and clinical perspectives.
The programme featured insightful guest lectures by Dr Ayushi Sahai, Professor and Pathologist, Department of Pathology, Tata Memorial Centre, Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI), Mumbai, and Dr Shilpa Prabhudesai, Senior Consultant and Head of Operations, Centre for Oncopathology, Mumbai.
The sessions explored key contemporary areas in oncopathology, including interpretation of core needle biopsies, the pathology spectrum of lung neoplasms, HER2 interpretation and its implications in breast cancer, and the role of Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) in lung cancer.
With a strong emphasis on case-based learning, reporting protocols and recent advances, the programme encouraged meaningful academic discussions and addressed practical challenges encountered in pathological reporting.
The interactive deliberations provided an enriching platform for strengthening diagnostic perspectives and fostering continued learning in the rapidly evolving field of cancer pathology.

A significant step forward in patient-friendly ophthalmic imaging at Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be) University Medical College, Pune, with the Department of Ophthalmology recently performing an oral angiography of the eye, believed to be among the first of its kind in Pune.
Retinal angiography plays an important role in evaluating blood circulation at the back of the eye and supporting diagnosis in several retinal conditions. Traditionally, the contrast dye is administered intravenously, which may be associated with discomfort and, rarely, significant adverse reactions.
In this innovative approach, the dye was administered orally, mixed with orange juice, offering a more comfortable experience for the patient while enabling the acquisition of clinically useful retinal images for diagnosis.
This achievement reflects the Department's commitment to exploring safer, patient-centric approaches while advancing the possibilities of ophthalmic imaging and clinical care.

A proud academic moment for the Department of Radiology, Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be) University Medical College, Pune, as Dahlia Fernandes, Junior Resident, presented her research at KCR 2026 – Korean Congress of Radiology, held in Goyang-si, South Korea.
Her presentation, “Uterine AVM as a Mimic of RPOC: Avoiding Catastrophic Hemorrhage with Timely Imaging,” highlighted the critical role of timely and accurate imaging in recognising a potentially life-threatening condition and enabling appropriate clinical decision-making.
The work was undertaken under the guidance and collaboration of Dr. Priscilla Joshi, Professor & Head, Department of Radiology; Dr. Vivek Murumkar, Consultant Interventional Radiologist; and Dr. Aditi Dongre, Associate Professor, Department of Radiology, Bharati Hospital, Pune.
Such platforms reflect the commitment of our academic community towards clinical excellence, research, knowledge exchange and advancing healthcare through the power of medical imaging.

A significant contribution to the growing body of evidence on autism and child health, a research team from the Department of Pediatrics, Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University) Medical College, Pune, has published an Original Research article in Frontiers in Psychiatry, Section: Autism.
Titled “Association of iron deficiency and iron-deficiency anemia with behavioral problems in children with autism: a cross-sectional study,” the study by Dr. Jatan Uday Merwana, Dr. Vijay Raghunath Kalrao, Dr. Ritika Chaudhry and Dr. Leena Srivastava examines the association between iron status and behavioral concerns among children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
The findings highlight the association of iron deficiency and iron-deficiency anemia with clinically significant behavioral problems, while higher serum ferritin levels were inversely associated with both iron deficiency and behavioral concerns.
The study underscores the potential importance of routine iron-status assessment during the initial evaluation of children with ASD, particularly in high-burden settings such as India. It also highlights the need for well-designed randomized controlled trials to establish whether correcting iron deficiency can positively influence behavioral outcomes and reduce caregiver and healthcare burden.
Published on 10 September 2026 in Frontiers in Psychiatry, the research reflects Bharati Vidyapeeth’s continued commitment to evidence-based healthcare, meaningful clinical research and advancing knowledge that can translate into better outcomes for children and families.
