The Heritage Appreciation Workshop & Design Studio at COEP encouraged students to engage with heritage beyond visual observation. Inspired by Juhani Pallasmaa’s The Thinking Hand and The Eyes of the Skin, the workshop used freehand sketching as a tool to experience space, materiality, atmosphere and human interaction.

Led by Dr. Vaidehi Lavand, Ar. Niranjan Garde, Ar. Prajakta Chakravarthy, Ar. Suraj Bhunje and Ar. Niranjan Khopkar, in collaboration with urban sketcher Ar. Mayuresh Shirolkar, the workshop concluded with reflective presentations and peer-learning discussions. The insights gained will continue to inform the ongoing Design Studio and future explorations in heritage-led architectural design.

We are proud to celebrate Ar. Mandar Daithankar, Student Club President of the PMI Student Club at SMEF’s Brick School of Architecture, on being crowned the Winner of the PMI South Asia Campus to Career Challenge 2026 and representing South Asia at PMI Global LIM 2026 in Seoul, South Korea.

What happens when lived experiences meet critical observation and AI?

Students begin to see cities as dynamic narratives shaped by people, culture, infrastructure, and change.

As part of the Urban Studies 1 pedagogy, students reflected on their everyday experiences of the city and used AI to creatively transform these observations into comic strips. The exercise encouraged them to question, interpret, and engage with urban issues through a fresh lens.

The exercise reaffirmed a simple yet powerful idea: when students are encouraged to observe, reflect, and create, cities themselves become classrooms.
